Manufacturing Wholesale Fishing Tackle
By Angus MacLeod

As with all forms of sporting goods there are wholesale and retail sales aspects that the fishing tackle manufacturer must consider. Before the introduction of outlet stores, catalogues and now the internet providing wholesale priced fishing tackle direct from the manufacturer, the only means of purchasing fishing tackle was from the sporting goods store or the fishing tackle and bait shop. Wholesale fishing tackle is now widely available and is forcing the retail outlets into drastic reductions of their margins for carrying the same goods. While this is good for the fisherman or fisherwoman, or as the English prefer, angler, it is not good for the retail outlets.

As a matter of fact the large discount department stores are still able to offer significant amounts and varieties of fishing tackle with their own labels. They are also competing with direct wholesale outlets of fishing tackle. Given these sales channels and the competition, manufacturers of fishing tackle must now consider whether they need to provide a sales point of presence and direct marketing, to promote this new channel of the wholesale fishing tackle business.

Direct Marketing

Up until the last decade or so, communication with the consumer was not a standard practice of the wholesaler, and consumer direct marketing and sales was not included in any plan. Today, the manufacturer off fishing tackle must include consumer-direct wholesale fishing tackle marketing and sales as part of their portfolio. However, the availability of wholesale priced fishing tackle is not yet widely known.

Sponsorship of TV shows on fishing is often provided by the major manufacturers of boats, engines, and other fishing tackle. However, most of these shows reference the potential purchase of the product through a retail outlet. Wholesale fishing tackle is not overtly advertised, however, the availability of wholesale fishing tackle is not hidden either. TV based direct marketing efforts of the manufacturer often provide web sites, but the TV show or ad simply focuses on the benefits of the product, not the availability of the fishing tackle wholesale. This may seem irrelevant, but this passive behavior is what is perpetuating many of the relationships the tackle manufacturers have with major sporting good chains across the US.

Consumer Attitude

Regardless of the efforts taken to market on the internet or by catalogue, fishing tackle is best first assessed in person. Buying fishing tackle wholesale is beneficial when the consumer has already determined that the product fits their needs. But, when making the initial purchase of major tackle elements such as the rod and reel, there is nothing like feeling the product in your hands.
