What's Life Without A Fishing Pole?
By Angus MacLeod

As a working man or woman in this decade, it's not every weekend that we get to go fishing and just relax on the water. With a little planning, and some fishing gear and a fishing pole you can turn a weekend off into something a bit more memorable than a few beers and the football game. There's nothing quite like sitting on the edge of a peaceful lake or serene bay with a line in the water and nothing but sunshine and relaxation ahead. Fishing pole in hand, a few coolers with food and drink and the latest fishing map from that little hole in the wall bait shop you passed on your way out to the water combine to make for one of the best ways to lets off some steam on the weekend.

Now fishing has been established as both a relaxing and exciting sport that has really come out into the open in recent years. Based solely on the number of fishing pole manufacturers, fishing's popularity has increased by almost 300% in the past 15 years. You can buy a fishing pole in just about any convenience store located near water, some gas stations will even carry fishing equipment and fishing poles in stock. The popularity of the sport is largely attributed to the extreme increase in water accessibility and the affordability of boats and fishing equipment that has made it easier for the consumer to plan and enjoy a fishing trip.

A Trip This Weekend?

If you're thinking about a trip now, here are a few pointers to put on your checklist to ensure you enjoy your time spent on the water. You obviously will need the basics, such as a fishing pole, tackle, bait (live or artificial), and a body of water that contains fish. Next, depending on what time of day you'll be fishing, you will need all or a combination of sun block, flashlights, wide brimmed hat, long sleeves, and matches or some other way to start a fire. Make sure that you also bring plenty of water to keep your body hydrated while you enjoy the fishing and the sun. Another thing to try out is getting a hold of some of the local bait and tackle stores in the area you are going fishing. These people are like up to date fish finders that are free for you to ask questions about the hottest spot this time of year, or where the big ones are hiding. This will increase your chances of not only getting in some much needed relaxation, but a great story and some wonderful pictures to bring to the office on Monday.

Interesting Fish Facts & Fishing Tips
Fish are only able to swim because they have swimbladders which help to adjust their bouyancy. The bouyancy is able to be altered by changing the amount of gas within the swimbladder. The angler should take care not to damage the swimbladder by retrieving it too fast. This happens because the fish is unable to adjust the amount of gas quickly enough which can cause the bladder to burst or push their inards out of the mouth.
