Sport Fishing Waters: The Competition, The Over Fishing.
By Angus MacLeod

Fishing has become one of the most popular outdoor recreation sports in the past 15 years. As a highly competitive sport, and a high revenue staple for outdoor weather gear and fishing equipment, sport fishing competition waters has become an advertisement giant for outdoor fun. As it increases in popularity, and more and more money is spent advertising it's existence, the danger of over fishing becomes greater by the day.

Many of the lakes and rivers once used in sport fishing competitions, have been changed or abandoned due to the extreme amount of attention and fishing that these areas receive. The problem starts with a competition being held and local and national fisherman arrive from around the country to try their hand at whatever fish is being rated for the sport fishing tournament. This event is televised, syndicated, and transmitted across the state and across the nation on sport fishing channels. This attention draws more fishermen on the rest of the weekends when there is no tournament to the lake where they think they will catch the big trophy fish they saw on the television. This happens more and more for a few months until the lake has been fished out of their normal stocked numbers.

Defense

There are several programs, however, which are in place to fight against over-fishing and it's damaging effects on lakes and rivers all over the country. One of the most popular program, which is advertised by most major sport fishing companies is catch and release. This program encourages fisherman and fisherwomen to release caught fish, as their survival rate is extremely high if released at the time of catching. Sport fishing magazines and tournaments both encourage this form of recreational fishing as it prevents many of the damaging effects of over-fishing.

The second program in place is local state stocking programs which are designed to raise fish in small reservoirs and then release them into lakes which could use the population boost. These sport fishing conservation programs are extremely effective as most counties and states will stock private ponds and lakes for free if you call and ask them. This increases the amount of fishable bodies of water, which spreads out the fishing load so-to-speak. This keeps everyone from going to one single lake, and spreads them out on a few lakes which eases the strain on the fragile ecosystems of these bodies of water.

All in all, the programs in place help to alleviate some of the damaging effects from over-fishing. There are still some effects, like gasoline and oil content in over-fished lakes, which cause the water to be poisonous to the fish that live in it. This can only be avoided by proper motor maintenance, and the abstinence of motorized craft in the water all together.
