Surf Fishing Keeps Growing in Popularity in the United States
By Angus MacLeod

Surf fishing is the saltwater alternative to the freshwater fishing that is done on a lake or river. Surf fishing is widely popular in the United States, along the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts. It is a sport that anyone can participate in with a relatively minor cost for equipment, a good starter kit containing a rod and reel combination is available for minimal cost at most sporting goods stores across the nation. While there isn't one specific size or length that is best for surf fishing, and eight to nine foot rod is versatile enough for most fisherman.

Surf Fishing is Beauty and Ease Combined

The actually beauty of surf fishing is that anyone can walk or access a beach, ocean or bayside dock and cast their line into the saltwater. Beaches make an excellent choice for fishing and are accessible to everyone because many of the beaches are owned by public government and are therefore open to the public. Another reason that surf fishing is so popular is due to the fact that people do not have to have a lot of expensive equipment or have access to a boat. With a few tools, a bucket, some PVC pipe (driven deep into the sand, this works to hold your fishing pole) and the general fishing equipment, a fishing expedition is up and running at a minimal cost. Many people enjoy surf fishing because they are actually standing on land but still surrounded by the water that their prey is swimming in. Another positive aspect of surf fishing can be measured in the quality of friendships that can develop over time as people continue to visit and fish in the same areas.

The Secret is in the Bait

Generally, surf fishing bait is very seasonal, so it is best to ask at the bait store what the other fisherman are buying. This is something that is “shop talk” and offers and suggestions will be plentiful from the other fisherman in the store. However, if what you purchased isn't working, don't hesitate to mix and match different combinations of your bait. In addition to the live tackle, it is a good idea to take a couple fishing lures with you. Always buy two of each; there is nothing worse than to have a lure suddenly become popular with the fish and then hear it snap off your line, stuck in the mouth of a fish.

Surf Fishing is an Exciting Alternative to Rivers and Lakes

Surf fishing is a great experience and an interesting change if you are generally a river and lake fisherman. So, the next time you go to the coast, take along your fishing supplies and give surf fishing a cast.

Interesting Fish Facts & Fishing Tips
The trout has no sense of taste as they do not have taste buds. They rely upon their sight and food is taken quickly. There is little point adding a flavor to an artificial fly but the trout does possess olfactory organs that can pick up odors.
