Armstrong Laminate Flooring Offers Beauty, Durability
By Arthur Sneddon
For the appearance of expensive flooring and the durability of wood and stone Armstrong laminate flooring can offer the properties of commercial grade materials without the commercial grade costs. Regardless of the room in which you want to upgrade your flooring, Armstrong laminate flooring has the color and design to fit your requirements.
Construction of the Armstrong laminate flooring consists of four separate layers laminated together to provide everything you would expect in a flooring material. The top layer is designed to protect the floor against wear. The abrasion classification will tell you how well the layer will protect the second layer from wear and for residential applications an abrasion classification of three is usually sufficient.
The second layer of an Armstrong laminate flooring is a photo image of stone or wood, or any other material, which makes the flooring appear more realists, closely resembling the real thing. The inner core of high-density fiberboard, impregnated with melamine gives the flooring its strength and durability. The fourth layer, or the bottom layer, is made of paper saturated with resin to provide moisture resistance to help prevent warping.
Installation Options Provide Versatility
Since Armstrong laminate flooring is designed as an interlocking floating floor, it can be installed over virtually any existing floor. High pile carpet will need to be removed, however and a sub-floor material to reduce noise and provide a vapor barrier may be needed in some applications, This flooring with its tongue and groove design can be installed over an existing floor. It is not necessary to nail or glue it to the sub-floor or existing materials.
If the floor is being installed in a bathroom or other area where excessive moisture may be an issue it is recommended that the floor be sealed at the edges with caulking compound or floor sealer as well as glued at the tongue and groove joints to prevent moisture from getting under the Armstrong laminate flooring.
Laminate flooring is designed to be used on any floor of the house, above or below grade although as previously noted special installation considerations may be needed in moisture-laden environments. While Armstrong laminate flooring will add beauty and durability to your floors, they will not last as long as natural hardwood floors. Additionally, they cannot be refinished in the event they become damaged or discolored. However, since it is of a interlocking floating design, replacing a section can usually be easily done.
