Fly Fishing: The Basics
By Tom Haddow

Upon discovering the wonderful sport of fly fishing you will realize that one of the most enjoyable aspects of the sport is that while you are out fly fishing you are out in the fresh open air able to fully appreciate the beautiful surroundings.

Learning about fly fishing requires the grasping of some of the sport's basics. There are many resources available which will acquaint you with the sport and it's equipment, types of knots and the ways in which to cast. You will find all manner of info about fly fishing from these resources.

It Really Isn't That Difficult

Fly fishing is not really as difficult as it first looks. Equipped with gear such as rod, reel, line and fly you will be able to fully partake in the sport. It is not just only about catching trout as one can fly-fish for other fish species such as bluegill, bass, pike, tarpon and many others. The basic method of fly fishing process is the casting of a fly that is attached to a leader attached to a fly line using a fly rod..

One of the most important things to keep in mind is the correct choice of fishing equipment which needs to be well balanced - that is the reel should be perfectly matched to the chosen rod and both should be chosen to suite the particular situation. Remember that the rod does not have to be as versatile as those rods used in other fishing styles such as spinning. Most books about fishing have a section teaching the angler how to choose equipment suitable for a certain species of fish. However the most important fly fishing basic fact is that all of the equipment used should complement each other and, function in unison.

Many books contain details on how to tie many of the knots an angler is ever likely to need to know (especially those required to correctly assemble the gear). Neatness is, possibly, the most important factor in tying effective knots. Quality knots are crucial for success, if the knot were to slip it would most probably end up breaking up you really need to remember to fully tighten all knots. Any fly fishing basics course should include details on how to tie knots such as those known as Arbor, nail, perfection, surgeon, and improved clinch.

Casting: You will need to learn a couple of the various casting methods such as the back cast, and the forward cast. The back cast has three basic elements which involves the moving of the the rod slowly upwards, applying tension to the line, accelerating the line and stopping abruptly and, finally allowing the rod to drift back slowly in order to prepare for the forward cast. The forward cast has two sections used to accelerate the rod and then to bring it to an abrupt stop and then following through to the finish.

Once you have grasped the fly fishing basics, there is no reason why you should not get the best out of your next fishing trip. The choice of books, video's and DVD's available on the subject as it is wide and diverse. There are even some very old books that remain highly useful today and are even considered collectable. There are also many magazines available and nearly all of them include sections that cover fly fishing basics and, of course, there are a great many web sites out there offering immeasurable amounts of information.

Fly Fishing Facts, Tips & Tactics
A common mistake made by anglers is to assume that the heavier the line the further it will cast. This is not always true and using a line that is too heavy for a shorter fishing rod will cause you no end of problems. Consider packing a spare spool at all times, they are reasonably cheap and can make a world of difference if you are having one of those days.
