Knowing The Fly Fishing Basics
By Angus MacLeod
Fishing has always been a pastime. Many adults might think back to when their grandpa took them to a lake or stream as kids and all of the fun that they had. Maybe as an adult people have taken their own kids or their grandkids fishing. It makes memories in the next generation’s lives. Now there are a lot of people who love to fish and many of those people fly fish. Fly fishing basics are needed for anyone deciding to try to learn how to fish in this manner. Fly fishing isn’t really hard, it’s just different and once the basics have been mastered, people can fish anytime they choose and catch fish.
One of the first fly fishing basics that someone needs to know is about the rod and reel. Fly fishing rods are different from regular rods. They are taller and thinner and each rod is a certain weight. A four or five weight rod would be for trout and pan size fish. Rods go from there to large ocean fishing rods. Using the wrong rod will make fishing very difficult. Another fly fishing basic is the reel. The reel type is different from ordinary reels. It’s something that a person should ask about at any fly fishing store in order to understand.
More Fly Fishing Basics
Even the fishing line is completely different. Fly line is much larger in diameter and is completely visible. Some lines sink and others are made to float on the water. At the end of the line is tied a monofilament line called a tippet. This is what actually does the fishing. It is usually around six feet long and the lure is tied to the end. In this way the fish don’t see the fly line. When fly fishing, the lure used isn’t really a lure in the true sense. Artificial flies are used in place of large heavy lures.
Another fly fishing basic is understanding the hatch of insects on the water a person fishes. Knowing the different insects means a person will catch more fish. Tying on a certain fly that looks like the insects that the fish are eating will entice the fish to strike.
These are just a few fly fishing basics. Many basics take time and experience to learn. The best way to learn is to either take a class on fly fishing or to hire a local guide for fly fishing lessons on the water. It’s a fun way to fish and many times it is more productive than fishing with tackle and heavy lures.
