Essential Fly Fishing Equipment
By Peter Hamilton

Fly fishing usually takes place out in the wild countryside where you are not likely to find a shopping mall. You might be lucky and find a local fishing tackle shop but it makes far more sense to get the proper fly fishing equipment ahead of time. Buying the correct fly fishing equipment can make the difference between catching some fish or going home empty handed.

A good quality fly fishing rod and reel could make all the difference. With the incorrect rod and reel you could end up spending hours on the stream with little success. A good quality fly reel could save you from the annoying frustration of having to spend your time sorting out a tangled line. For this reason a spare spool for your reel can be a life saver! Also ensure that your reel is strong and sturdy, testing it out before purchase whenever possible.

Remember that your equipment includes the appropriate apparel because the best streams (those full of fish) are often found in the most remote areas and having to remain cold and wet until you find somewhere to warm up is not very pleasant. Buying good quality apparel specially designed to keep a fly fisherman dry can make the even the dampest and windiest of days a suitable day for spot of salmon fishing.

Fortunately, after a only few minutes online or a quick visit to a tackle shop you will see that there is great deal fly fishing equipment available for the avid angler. The choice of fishing apparel available in specialty shops and via outlets on the internet is incredible.. It is obvious that a fly fisherman needs is apparel that will keep him dry and warm so good quality waders or waterproof shoes are also needed along with a high quality warm waterproof jacket is essential - where possible opt for a breathable material. Remember a warm fisherman lasts longer in the water than a cold wet one and the longer you spend on the quest for fish the more likely you are to succeed.

Fly Fishing Equipment Essentials: The Fly

Fly fishing would simply not be fly fishing without the essential fly! The fly is the most essential piece of equipment used to attract those salmon and sea bass to the hook. Many seasoned fly fishermen wouldn't dream of using flies other those prepared by themselves. They spend an incredible number of hours, usually in the off season, preparing the best flies they can from a selection of well proven fly patterns. Unfortunately many anglers do not have the time or talent to make their own flies so you will be pleased to know that there is an extensive variety available for all types of fish.

While fly fishing of the past demanded the use of specific flies for specific species the modern angler has found that many flies that have been designed for one species is just as readily taken by another. However there does appear to be some evidence to support the claim that the same species in different areas take to different flies. This may be due to any number of factors so. if you are planning a fly fishing trip, think about asking a local as to which fly fishing equipment is most suitable for that area.

Other Fly Fishing Equipment Essentials

We must not forget a most essential piece of fly fishing equipment - the HAT. Where else can you keep that killer fly? OK I am only joking, a tackle box is more preferable but a good quality hat is really important. It is an important fact to remember that most of the body's heat is lost through the top of the head. By wearing a hat you will be amazed at the difference it makes in keeping warm.

A great tackle box is another piece of fly fishing kit that you can not do without. The last thing an expert fisherman wants to have to do is to leave as the fish are biting just to go back to his vehicle to collect a fly. A tackle box will ensure that you are able to carry all of the fly fishing equipment you are likely to need during the trip.
