By Angus MacLeod
Fly fishing Michigan will provide anglers with enough opportunity to fly fish for trout. Without a doubt, Michigan is full of rivers to fly fish in and fortunately there are many good trout stream as well. A wonderful fly fishing Michigan River is the Mainstream of the Au Sable River which is the most well known trout stream in the state. One can fly fish downstream from Grayling or downstream from Mio and, with some concentrated effort, the fly fisher will be able to land some of the bigger trout that can be found in the waters in this state. The upper section of Grayling area is known as The Holy Water and provides good access as well as easy wading and amazing hatches to allow one to be able to fly fish all year round.
One can find many fish in the waters in these parts and fly fishing Michigan will allow one to catch good sized fish, with browns predominating. The lower section that lies below Mio holds some pretty big fish that are browns as well as rainbows. The waters are also big and difficult to wade but one can still fly fish on foot.
The Manistee River
Fly fishing Michigan can be lots of fun in the Manistee River and should be the first choice as it is a great river and fishery that offers fly fishers outstanding opportunity to land brook and brown trout. This river is home to a large number of large brown trout and the Upper Manistee River is simply amazing to go fly fishing for trout and, if one ventures a bit higher upstream, one can wade and get the feet wet while fly fishing.
Well known worldwide is the Pere Marquette River that has abundance of salmon and steelhead fish. The area surrounding Baldwin makes for some of the most attractive fly fishing Michigan for a number of different species of fish and, the Pere Marquette River has excellent hatches and a sizeable trout population to keep the fly fisher occupied and be able to enjoy what he or she loves to do best – fly fish. One can land browns and brook trout as well as some young salmon or steelheads. For those who wish to angle for salmon or steelheads, it is best to visit during the peak of their migratory runs for having a better chance of landing them.

| If you happen to catch a fish that appears to have a deformed backbone (usually curved) it could be a sign of poor diet, especially vitamin C. This has been observed in hatchery raised fish so it is possible that it could happen to wild fish. |
