Fly fishing Rods: Knowing What They Are Will Help In Buying The Right One
By Angus MacLeod
For the enthusiastic angler who needs to regularly hit the river to experience the fun and excitement of fly fishing, there is a large choice of fly fishing rods available to him. Among the most famous brands who produce fly fishing rods are Sage, Orvis, LaCrosse and Hardy.
As with any other product you should check them out properly before you make your final decision to ensure that the fishing rod will meet all your fishing requirements. Selecting the correct rod for the task and one that is matched to your style will greatly enhance your time spent on the water.
Evaluating The Rod
Obviously, you would like to be able to purchase the latest and greatest of the moment to ensure that you get the best in fly fishing rods. However, for most of us, we settle for what is available at our local tackle shop. They usually have a reasonable selection so you will need to carefully evaluate each one to find the one which is most suitable for you. Evaluating a fly fishing rod is relatively easy, you will need to understand the pro's and con's of the materials which have been used in the construction of the rod, this usually means a choice between graphite or fiber glass but there is also the option of the classic bamboo rod. The first thing you should do is check the rod for flexibility, the amount of rod stiffness or flexibility can have a profound effect upon your casting but can also effect the reeling in of fish. The amount of flexibility is the action and there are slow-action fly fishing rods as well as medium-action and fast-acting rods.
Another important factor to consider is the length of the rod, shorter rods usually have less action compared to the longer fly fishing rods as they do not produce much torque when casting and reeling. A beginner would need a rod of sufficient length to be able to get a reasonable casting distance but also it should short enough to enable easy maneuvering when you are in the water.
Another point to consider is the fly fishing rod's, reel. The reel is placed at the near end of the rod which is thicker and more stiff which helps to reinforce the rod as both rod and reel can take enormous strain when reeling in the fish. It is important that the fly fishing rod reel is lined up properly with the guides, it is surprising how many cheaper rods fail to do this correctly and it can cause no end of bother. The area around the reel is called the grip and there are several types on the market including the cigar grip, half-well grip as well as full-well grips. It is generally accepted that cork is the best material for the grip but you may find cheaper materials are fine for you.
A f ly fishing rod employs the use of three different types of loop to guide the line these are the stripping guide, the snake-guide and tip-top guides. Stripping guides help prevent the line from getting entangled as well as reducing friction between the line and the other guides. Snake guides are small metal loops used widely to keep the line very close to the rod during casting. Tip-top guides are those found at the very tip of the rod and aides the control the direction a line goes when the angler casts. Once the angler has a grasp of different aspects of the fly fishing rod, he or she can then choose one with confidence and enjoy the fishing adventures.
