Winter Fly Fishing Is Considered Hardcore Steelhead Fly Fishing
By Angus MacLeod
Steelhead fish are anadramous and share their origin with salmon found in the Atlantic and Pacific. Most steelheads are found in West Coast of North America as well as in Russia though many are also found in the tributaries of the Great Lakes where they were planted in the late 1800s and, reached a sizeable population in the 1940s.
Modern Techniques Are Adapted From Atlantic Salmon Catching Techniques
Steelhead fly fishing techniques are basically derived and adapted from the traditional ones used to catch Atlantic salmon in the British Isles as also on the eastern seaboard of North America. The method uses in steelhead fly fishing is to swing the flies downstream of the angler on floating or sinking lines. Modern steelheading involves nymphing methods that are much like those used by trout anglers.
Flyfishers consider winter steelhead fly fishing to be hardcore fly fishing and can involve enduring hours of repeated casting in cold and freezing waters, hoping for a small tug that would signify a catch. Unlike trout, steelheads are not always in the river system in which one is fly fishing and groups of fish are known to move up or down the river system with changing seasons. One would thus need to have latest information as well as need a guide to get best results.
One should also consider the weather conditions which may turn into winter storms and convert the river into a brown torrent within hours. Steelhead fly fishing also requires a lot of patience and keeping expectations in check. One good catch could be a great day in the life of a steelhead fly fisher and, one may not always get big numbers of catches as is the case with trout fishing.
Steelhead fly fishing also must consider and understand steelhead etiquette. It is quite common to see many steelhead fly fishers on a river system at a particular pool or where steelheads are most concentrated. It thus makes good sense to take a position where there is least interference to other anglers and also one should be properly equipped.
Though steelhead fly fishing need not always be done in winter time but, one still would need to have layers of modern synthetic long underwear, fleece garments, fingerglass gloves as well as plenty of warm clothes to stay dry as well as comfortable the entire day. One should also have the best in steelhead flies and these include woolly bugger, black bear green butt, conehead zuddler, striptease and much more.
| Fly Fishing Facts, Tips & Tactics |
| If you are not having much luck on the day consider changing your fly. Yes many follow this tactic and choose a fly with vastly different colors than the one first used but few consider trying flies of a different size. Keep a notebook to record which give the best results and then consider both color and size before choosing another fly to try. |
