Utah Fly Fishing Can Produce Trophy Fish

The state of Utah is only recently being recognized as a hot spot for fishing and Utah fly fishing is rapidly gaining recognition as offering some of the nation's better angling opportunities. Some of the best trout fishing in Utah is found in the Strawberry Reservoir where rainbows are stocked with the cutthroat trout, offering some of the largest catches in the state.

A cutthroat trout weighting 26 pounds, twelve ounces was pulled from the Strawberry Reservoir. The rainbows are sterilized before being stocked into this lake to prevent cross breeding with the resident cutthroats and this also helps them grow faster and bigger providing some of the best Utah fly fishing. Rainbows and Cutthroats are typically in the 24 inch range with bigger fish showing up on occasion.

A 51 pound lake trout was pulled from the Flaming Gorge Reservoir back in 1988, a record that still stands today, and a 33 pound, 10 ounce brown trout was taken in 1977. Although about 60 percent of the cutthroat trout caught are native to Utah waters, brook, albino and tiger trout are also found in sizes up to about 10 pounds.

The Green River and Provo River rank near the top of the national list of the best Utah fly fishing rivers as well as the Strawberry Reservoir a top choice for floating while fly fishing rounds out the top three guided destinations for Utah fly fishing. There are many additional rivers and streams that offer excellent fishing opportunities, especially if not limiting yourself to only one breed of fish.

Utah fly fishing for trout does offer some of the best, but the regulations can be confusing so before you head out to the water make sure you become familiar with the rules regarding the particular waterway you will be fishing. Some have a two fish limit and others may have four or more and some restrict fishing during certain times of the year.
