Intro To The Garage
By Arthur Sneddon

The word "garage" has a number of meanings but for the sake of this section we shall concentrate upon the meaning as it is found in the words "garage doors".

In other words the garage which may be described as a building for storage of a car and/or other vehicles, similar to but more substantial than a carport. This type of residential garage is typically attached to or alongside a house.

The garage is usually situated towards the front of the house with a driveway connecting it to the main road. Most modern garage doors employ the use of an up and over mechanism utilizing an electric chain drive which can be operated manually or via remote control. However it is still common to see wooded garage doors that open outwards though this is usually on older houses to match the particular style of the dwelling. Most modern garages accommodate one or two cars with room towards the back for garage cabinets and further storage for items such as garden furniture and tools or bicycles and motorcycles.

Other Uses Of The Garage

On a larger house it is not uncommon for garages to be able to be large enough for a few vehicles and even a room above which can sometimes be used as an apartment. As property prices continue to increase the popularity of garage conversions also increase (a garage conversion is where it's primary use is changed to create extra living space).

The garage is usually the domain of the man of the house. It is common to find it as a place of refuge from the stresses of family life and a place to escape into the world of power tools and other big boys toys. Many garage plans allow for extra space towards the back for the creation of workshops. The addition of a workshop to a garage can prove essential if you intent to carry out home improvements, where else can you ensure the availability of power, heat and light? There is also the added advantage of keeping any mess confined to one area and well away from the general living areas.

As I mentioned above it is increasingly common for the placement of an apartment above larger garages. However many guys take the opportunity to create a den or a games room which may be exclusive to the guys or used by the whole family. Sometimes this option can help you avoid the unnecessary expenses of moving to a larger home.

The space overhead in the garage is an excellent storage space for those items not used so often, these items can include kayaks and other seasonal equipment such as fishing gear. The garage is one of the most versatile buildings that exist and yet few give it much consideration when choosing a new home. If your house does not have one it it pretty easy to build one without the need of employing a builder as there are many prefabricated garage kits available that just need a few strong guys to help out for a couple of hours. If you are really stuck they can be delivered ready assembled or you could simply adapt a large shed.

We will discuss the many different aspects of the garage in the articles below. We hope that you find them useful and informative but, most of all, we hope that they provide you with a bunch of tips to enable you to make the most of your existing garage.
