Gardening Is For Life, Not Just Retirement
Gardening is a hobby most usually associated with retirement but why is this so? OK many of us seem to take it up after retiring from work but for many it provides a lifetime of enjoyment. I have been interested in gardening since I was a small boy and I was given some sunflower seeds taken from some rabbit food. It was amazing to see such a large flower from such a tiny seed within one summer. That was it, not before too long and I was a keen gardener planting many plants around the garden and even having a small vegetable patch towards the back of the garden (so that it remained from view from the house).
Vegetable Gardening
Before you sit down to lay out your garden design consider the many advantages to be had by the inclusion of a small vegetable garden. Not only do you benefit from cheaper vegetables (they are cheaper as it often costs the same price as one cabbage as it does to buy a whole packet of seeds that produce masses of cabbages very easily) but, if you plan an organic garden, you will have high quality, healthy and organic vegetables that taste so great because they are picked immediately before use! I am sure that you have heard the saying "just add water" to describe something that is easily done well gardening is basically that - just add water to the soil and in a couple of months - Hey Presto and a load of produce appears before you.
Flower Gardening
Flowers are beautiful, there is simply no denying it. They look and smell wonderful and can brighten up even the dullest of home environments. In my own garden I always plant the seeds of the "night scented stock" just below the windows of my home. That way, in the summer months, when the windows are often open in the evenings I can get the sweet scent of the flowers in the garden.
Flower gardening can be as simple as you want it or as complicated as you want to make it. You really can create a garden in any space available to you. I have even seen minature gardens created in old sinks or even large bottles. A small backyard is greatly improved by the simple addition of a few plants and some containers. You can even buy tall containers from your local garden center that have hanging flowers to create that instant hanging gardens of Babylon effect in a small area.
Perennials can be a real work saver. Plant them once and they will return year after year. Of course this means that your workload is reduced each year. However there is the added benefit that perennials grow larger each year and when they reach full maturity they are at their most gorgeous. Perennials also make great gifts and are often given as Mother's Day or Easter gifs.
Perennials are often easy to propagate. Many only need to be split or bits of the plant gently eased away from the edges of the larger clump of roots. This greatly helps reduce the costs and can make it affordable enough for all of us to enjoy this invigorating pastime.
Gardening is Great Fun
Yes gardening can actually be great fun. I know this because my children always had a thrill helping me, especially when I was using the garden hose. They even seemed to get great enjoyment from simple tasks such as cutting the grass with the lawnmower but great care must be taken at all times as accidents can so easily happen when using such equipment.
You will find the articles below go into the subject in greater detail. I hope that they prove useful and informative. If you find them so please call back soon as I plan to add some tips throughout the year.
