Automotive GPS Helps Prevent Getting Lost
By Jimmy MacLeod
The person with a penchant for getting lost while traveling may find an automotive GPS system a handy device to have in the vehicle. Whether it is a stand-alone GPS system, a handheld system or a computer or personal data assistant type, they can help drivers stay on the right road.
No matter which GPS system you use, there should never be a monthly charge for the automotive GPS service or other GPS-related subscription fees. There are, however additional services that can be added, which do require the payment of additional fees. For example, real-time traffic reports or weather and satellite radio all will cost extra per month.
The use of a global positioning system is allowed under federal law and the federal government provides the service itself, which is why companies cannon charge for the automotive GPS service. However, to receive turn-by-turn directions or a map of your pending travel route will cost money from the company that is supplying the service.
One of the many advantages of having an automotive GPS system in your vehicle is in knowing its location at all times. In the event your vehicle is stolen, if your system is tied into a national service, its current location can by spotted and that information turned over to law enforcement for quick recovery. Many rental car companies use this service with an automotive GPS system in their rental cars to track their use and location.
Help Is Just A Map Check Away
Help is always quicker to obtain, if needed, by simply checking the map available on your automotive GPS unit. Calling on your cell phone, you can give an accurate location or, if you are late and others are worried, they can always check your location to see if anything has happened to cause you to be late.
The handheld units can be hooked into your home computer and automotive GPS maps downloaded into the PDA for use in an upcoming trip. Loading in turn-by-turn directions can limit the possibilities of getting lost and wasting valuable vacation time. Many handheld units are available for many different uses, including sports and marine use, and can serve as an automotive GPS unit for your car.
In many respects, an automotive GPS is better than a cell phone as it can help you find your way on unfamiliar roads, enable you to give exact directions to someone coming to help you with a broken-down vehicle or enable you to be located in the event you cannot seek help on your own.
