Hair Care: Simple Do's And Don'ts

Hair care is often unique to the owner. This article is to help you understand the nature of hair and some basic tips on hair care to each particular type of hair. For the sake of this article "hair care" refers to the hair found upon the human head.

Personal hair care is often overlooked with many assuming that a quick brush or combing of the hair is sufficient. You would be amazed at the number of people who simply fail to shampoo their hair often enough to lead to healthy hair. Even fewer people understand the need for differences in hair care depending upon the type.

What is Hair

A technical way in which to describe hair is that it is a "filamentous outgrowth of dead cells from the skin". Upon closer inspection the hair fibre consists mainly of keratins, proteins and amino acids. Strangely the head hair of a human grows much longer than most other mammals.

To put it more simply the hair we see on our head is not living. There are rare cases that have reported people who feel pain when they have their hair cut but most people read such reports in disbelief. However there is a part of the hair that is living, the hair follicle which has a sebaceous gland and contains the hair root. It is the hair follicle which contributes most towards which type of hair you will have. A typical human head has over 100,000 hair follicles but the number varies considerably depending on the color of the hair from around 86,000 for somebody with red hair right up to around 146,000 follicles on the head of somebody with blonde hair.

Other factors can have an effect upon the condition of our hair such as the hair care products we choose to use.
