Wearing a Real Chanel Handbag Is Wearing a Real Work of Contemporary Art: Coco Chanel, True Artist
By Francis Sinclair
Snobs like to sniff down on fashion designers as trend-seekers creating fads instead of creating real art. The condescending view of designers is highly uninformed, and sadly out of touch, as seen now in the rise of the respect of designers as artists. Museums and exhibits now are offering shows dedicated to the works of fashion giants such as Christian Dior, Oleg Cassini and Coco Chanel. It is not ridiculous to think that a real Chanel handbag is akin to a painting or a sculpture. The importance of fashion in contemporary culture cannot be underestimated.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art Offered More than Just Suits of Armor or Sarcophaguses
New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art brought together Chanel's work, as well as, works related to the designer in its special exhibit, Chanel. Visiting the exhibit was looking at more than just a real Chanel handbag, as there are other pieces, including original designs, sketches and photographs. Along with the fashion of the House of Chanel, the exhibit also explored the historical and cultural significance of Coco Chanel – a designer whose name has become synonymous with the notion of high fashion. A real Chanel handbag is as recognizable as other pieces from the House of Chanel. The iconic three-piece suit is as memorable as the interlocking C's of the Chanel logo.
More than Just Chanel No 5: A Wide Range of Frocks for Chanel Followers
The exhibit was an excellent collection of artifacts and paraphernalia from Chanel's fashion house. Those who sought for simply a real Chanel handbag were undoubtedly pleased to find a lot more. Along with the stunning creations, an interesting aspect of the exhibit was the collection of photographs. Coco Chanel was almost as fascinating as her fashion itself, and the photographs capture a 20th Century genius. Premier photographers, including Cecil Beaton have captured Chanel's image, and can be viewed along other stunning pictures of the designer.
I Missed the Exhibit: Is it too late?
Like a real Chanel handbag, the exhibit was a much-loved affair. While there's nothing like the real thing, one can purchase the Metropolitan Museum of Art's coffee book of Chanel's work, much of which was shown during the exhibit. As with the exhibit, Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld has contributed to the book, with his interpretations of Chanel's designs. The book retails for $39.95.
