How to Remove Head Louse from Children Under two Years of Age

Lice infestation is a terrible irritation because it involves a lot of trauma and work to get rid of these parasites. The female louse can lay about 50 eggs per day which can make for a pretty horrifying number in just a few days of infection.

Also, the fact that the lice eggs do not die when the hair is treated with lice-killing solution makes for another problem. Usually, children aged 6-12 years old ‘catch' lice from school. And many times, children bring the infestation home to their younger siblings.

What to do When Your Toddler's Hair is Infested with Lice

There are many ways to remove head louse, both with chemical solutions and herbal ones. All these methods involve some type of poison that acts on the lice and kills them. Sometimes, these solutions penetrate the outer skin of the nits, while some do not.

The eggs usually don't go away even after treatment and the process is to be repeated at least once in seven days for three consecutive times to remove head louse after they hatch, including the baby lice or nymphs as they are called. It is a good idea to use such a medicated shampoo every Saturday or Sunday to be sure that lice do not settle again in your child's hair.

Since these solutions are in some measure poison, they should never be used for treatment of children under 2 years old. In these cases you should be extremely careful about the method adopted to remove head louse from young children.

Purchase a very fine toothed comb (it is available and known as a lice comb) and comb the hair of the child before and after shampooing their hair. This will remove head louse (particularly the eggs) from the hair as they get caught in the comb. This should be repeated every 3-4 days. In the meantime, you should be careful that the lice do not jump over to your hair or other members of the family.

As a precautionary method everybody else in the house, until the toddler's hair is clear, should use medicated shampoo at least once a week. Ensure that all the linen, the pillow cases, the blankets, the soft toys and any place where the lice could hide are washed in hot water.

Immediately separate and wash the combs, brushes and all the material that comes into contact with your child's hair. As well, if the child's hair remains affected by lice for 2-3 weeks even after shampooing and combing every 3rd or 4th day, you will need to consult a doctor for suggestions of what medicine to apply in order to remove head louse from the child's head.
