Headache Treatment Options
By M. A. Fulmar

Headaches are one of the most common disorders of adults. While headache treatments are available in the market, they cannot be cured. Fortunately, headache treatments, such as pain relievers and supplements, can control the pain associated with frequent occurrences of headaches.

The available headache treatments are recommended only as a part of the patient's wellness program, which includes proper diet, daily exercise, stress management, avoidance of bad habits and relaxation.

Treatments for headaches are specially formulated depending on personal health history, kind of headache being experiences, individual reactions to medicine and health conditions associated with headaches.

Several headache treatments, combined or taken separately should be tested to find the most appropriate medication. However, you can benefit from these medicines by taking them daily (or prophylactically) to prevent daily headaches, or you can take them once a headache episode begins (abortively).

Two Areas of Headache Treatment

When treating headaches, medical experts focus on two areas – abortive and prophylactic therapies. Abortive treatments work by stopping a headache attack that has started. On the other hand, prophylactic (preventive) treatments work by keeping headaches from re-occurring.

Abortive headache treatments are combinations of medicines that are used once a headache is begins. If the doctor recommended this kind of therapy, you will take any over-the-counter pain reliever and increase its effect by combining an analgesic.

When a patient does not respond to pain relievers and analgesic, doctors may recommend ergotamine and D.H.E. in treating migraines or headaches. While appropriate amounts of ergotamine can prevent headaches, it is associated with side effects and drug interaction, so be careful in taking these medications and always consult your doctor before this therapy.

Prophylactic headache treatments can prevent headaches from occurring even before the pain begins. However, this kind of treatment is rarely prescribed unless a patient undergoes more than ten headaches a month.

When a patient undergoes a prophylactic headache treatment, your doctor will monitor possible side effects, drug interactions and health history. Medicine for this kind of headache treatment should be taken with low doses at first, should be increased slowly and should never be stopped abruptly.

There is no single duration of this therapy and the schedule of a prophylactic headache treatment depends largely on individual conditions. Experts recommend this therapy of not more than six months.

In treating headaches, you should remember that headaches are caused by two or more factors and it should be treated by testing and determining each factor before medicating. Consult a medical expert before treating headaches.
