Uses for a Home Security Surveillance Camera
By Arthur Sneddon
There are in fact many different uses for a home security surveillance camera, and the following article examines the top two and offers advice on buying considerations.
Outdoor Surveillance
Some homeowners use a home security surveillance camera as part of their outdoor home security plan. One or more cameras are usually placed strategically at doors, windows, and possibly (on large tracts of land) at the entrance to the property.
An outdoor home security surveillance camera may serve several purposes. First, many burglars will "case" a joint before attempting an actual robbery, and the cameras may alert the owners to the burglar's presence before he or she actually has a chance to commit the crime. Second, sometimes just the sight of the home security surveillance camera is enough to discourage the burglar from attempting to enter the house.
Finally, if the home is burglarized, the photos or video recordings from the camera can be used to identify and prosecute the criminal.
People purchasing an outdoor home security surveillance camera should look for a camera that is weatherproof and has night vision technology. Since some burglars may try to cover the camera lens or destroy the camera, it's also a wise idea to buy a tough case or housing for the camera.
Indoor Surveillance
Indoor surveillance with a home security surveillance camera can be used in much the same way as outdoor surveillance, to discourage burglars and identify them after a crime has been committed.
In recent years, people have also been using an indoor home security surveillance camera to observe the behavior of employees, children, or the elderly.
Many parents, for instance, use so-called "nanny cams" when leaving their young children with a babysitter. These cameras can be hidden in objects like a wall clock or a ball point pin. The babysitter is usually unaware that he or she is being observed. "Nanny cams" are somewhat limited in their usefulness, however, and may even give parents a false sense of security. For instance, the fact that the camera located in the bedroom records no abusive behavior doesn't mean that abuse isn't occurring in the kitchen or the bathroom.
Another use for home security surveillance cameras is to check on the welfare of children or the elderly. Usually, the people in this situation know they are being observed and may even welcome the presence of the camera. When cameras are being used for this purpose, it's important to make sure that the cameras cover as much of the house as possible. It may be wise to spend money on motion sensor technology so that all the cameras do not have to run all the time.
Home security surveillance cameras can serve several valuable purposes. If used correctly along with other security measures, they can also bring peace of mind to home owners, parents, and adult caregivers.
