Horse Health Tips for Old Horses
By Wendy Simons
What happens to those majestic stallions that steal our hearts while winning races? Where do they go when they stop running? How do they spend their old age? These are some questions that plague a lot of people at the back of their mind. Some people take action immediately, at the spur of the moment and they set up an animal-care shelter, while some others learn how they can be of help on these farms which could be quite lucrative.
Old Age Farms for Horses Are a Dignified Way Out
Horses are known to bond easily with humans and pine for them when separated. They also are extraordinarily sensitive to love or lack of it, and can become depressed just as humans do, when they feel rejected and unloved. People who love horses have tried (some with a high success rate) to get them a nice place for retirement where the animals can grow old with dignity and care.
You will find that the people on these ranches deeply enjoy being near these old horses, and they are quite good at showing their love and affection too. The horses most of the time need special care and medical treatment, for which these horse-ranches usually have a few veterinary doctors on call.
The horse health concerns of old horses differ a lot from those of young stallions. Learn to be watchful for any trouble in the old horse's health so you could, to whatever extent possible, provide it the required remedy. Some important guidelines that will help you in maintaining the old horse's health are as follows:
1. Avoid at all costs exposure to dust mites, mold, etc. Ensure that they never have to consume mildewed food and the like.
2. Always keep the old horses on a high nutrient diet, and feed them at frequent intervals. An old horse's stomach will not allow it to digest more than three small meals.
3. The old horses health will heavily depend on what type of water is offered. Ensure that it has warm water served in clean containers.
4. Exercise plays an important role in the good horse health. The old horses need to be exercised regularly, on a daily basis, so their muscles do not get cramped and the circulation is maintained at the required levels.
5. Regular check ups with a veterinarian would ensure satisfactory horse health as accordingly, he can adjust the levels of medication. Old horses are highly prone to tumors; and therefore a regularly check-up can red flag any tell-tale signs.
