Keep your Life in Order by Cleaning House and Office Regularly
By Audrey Sneddon
It is a fact that many Americans spend more time hunting for items than they do actually using them. If you are in the majority of the population who would consider yourself moderately messy to a hopeless pack rat, consider the advantages of cleaning out your house and office. When your surroundings are clutter-free, your mind can work more creatively and productively. Necessary items can be at your finger tips with minimal time spent searching and more time spent completing tasks. The amount of time that is freed up can be used for additional work – or additional relaxation, depending on what you prefer. Even money can be saved by regularly cleaning your house and office, since you will no longer be buying duplicates of items that you have but cannot find in the black hole that you call home. If you are sold on the advantages to keeping your house and office clean but don't know where to begin the de-cluttering, there are a number of tips and tricks that can make your road to a clutter-free existence much smoother to travel.
Starting with the House
Begin your cleaning of your house and office on the home front, by making an action plan for de-cluttering the house and keeping it neat as a pin. The first step is to go through room by room, and get rid of as much excess as you possibly can. For some, this will be a much more painful and challenging process because it is difficult to let go of possessions. If you are one of these people, keep telling yourself throughout your clean-out process that you are paving the way to a more peaceful and orderly lifestyle. If you really can't bear to part with things, store them in a basement or attic for a few months, and then reassess the necessity of the items. Once your house has been sufficiently de-cluttered, and a place has been found for everything that you have decided to keep, make a weekly and monthly checklist for keeping your home clean. A weekly list should include a thorough wipe down of bathrooms and the kitchen, and a dusting and vacuuming of the rest of the house. Tailor your checklists to meet your individual needs.
Moving to the Office
Whether your office is in your home or the middle of the city, the same principles apply to office cleaning as house cleaning. First, de-clutter your desk and files by throwing out any papers that you deem unnecessary to keep. Make sure that you incorporate a system to keep track of appointments, deadlines and work in progress. The organizational system that you select can be electronic as well as the good, old-fashioned paper and pen style. Make sure that you have enough space to house the files that you do need to retain, and keep some desk space free for a personal item or two as well that will make your work space a little homier and more pleasant. Once your office has been cleaned out and organized to your satisfaction follow the same process for house and office cleaning by establishing weekly and monthly checklists to keep your work in order. A neat office will result in higher and more effective productivity which can even affect the bottom line of your business, so take that clean-up seriously. Clean spaces to work and play in will lead to better relaxation and a more peaceful outlook as well.
