Hypnosis: Not Just Fun
By Irvine Harper

Hypnosis is not just for laughs, yes there is much fun to be had but there is a very serious side to the technique which must be considered before you use it.

I was first introduced to hypnosis as a 13 year old teenager. Hypnotism seemed to be an endless source of hilarity and the medical benefits of hypnosis or even the possible dangers simply did not enter our minds.

Hypnosis is pretty easy to do. Simply reading a few articles, Observing a stage hypnotist can equip you with the knowledge.

Hypnosis Dangers

Hypnosis is a very powerful tool, it has many uses and the hypnotherapist is able to help many people obtain their goals. Hypnosis is used to combat weight problems equipping the person with the self confidence to lose weight. Other well known applications of hypnosis include the help with dealing with phobias, help with stopping smoking and many other problems. However few consider the possible risks.

Hypnosis risks involve the obvious risk to personal safety. The person being hypnotized is said to be in a semi-conscious state and totally reliant upon the hypnotist. I have witnessed stage hypnotists who have lost control of their subjects when they have attempted to get them to do something beyond which they would normally do. I suppose this is the power of the human mind in relation to self-preservation.

Learn hypnosis and have some fun, yes, as I explained earlier we had great fun with hypnosis but we were kids and not fully understanding of the possible consequences of our actions. I think that there is an inherent risk in conducting hypnosis without adequate knowledge! We did not realize that when a person is under hypnosis they take your words literally. Therefore it is of extreme important that great care is taken in the words used. We also did not realize that it is also very important that a full knowledge of the subjects mental history is known and understood. Hypnosis allows access to areas of the mind which are not normally accessible. It is the responsibility of the hypnotist/hynotherapist to tread very carefully.

As we grew up with the knowledge of the powers of hypnosis we often used the skill for entertainment. It was during our college years that we abused our knowledge. it was a great party trick and we were always invited to the best parties. Comparisons were drawn with stage hypnotism and we, admittedly, lapped up the attention. Sadly it wasn't long before we were mixing hypnosis with alcohol and that is a dangerous mix.

On a very alarming occasion we were performing our hypnosis routine while drinking. It was great fun to begin with but things started to go wrong at a very early stage. We had foolishly been hypnotizing the people in full view of everyone and this time somebody in the audience had followed our instruction. Sadly they had been smoking and the cigarette had burnt down and deeply into the skin of the person without them feeling it. We brought her round, dressed the wound and then carried on.

While one of our subjects was under hypnosis they began to display some very peculiar behaviors. At first they just added to the act and there was much amusement to be had but it wasn't long before members of the audience started to grow concerned. As we were "under the influence" of alcohol we just kept pushing things to the limits. Shockingly, and all of a sudden the guy went berserk and it took a bunch of us all of our energy to hold him down. The guy wasn't that big but he had strength from nowhere. We managed to bring him around but in the panic we had made errors. We had told him that he was in the front room of the house rather than the back room (where he actually was) but he seemed OK.

Everything seemed to settle down and the party resumed. Some time later the guy got up to leave and promptly walked full face into the wall. Of course we all fell about laughing and guided him to the door ignoring his obvious distress. It was a good while later that we realized that there was a problem and we decided to go and check that he had managed to get home alright. It really was a good job that we had as we found him in the middle of the high street knocking on a shop door screaming for his mother to let him in. He was deeply distressed but we again managed to bring him around but this time we had all sobered up. He went home and all seemed fine. However it transpired that the boy had very severe mental problems and we will never know to what degree our foolish behavior contributed to this.

So, please, please, please, if you are going to learn about hypnosis take the time to learn about it properly before experimentation. Ensure that all bases are covered and only proceed when you have a full understanding of the methods of hypnosis, the uses of it, the mental history of the subject - well, actually it is best avoided unless you take the time to learn about it properly and professionally. The risks are simply far too great to be messing with somebody's mind.

The articles below are there to help you understand hypnosis a little better and understand the many uses of it. We hope that you follow our advice above and treat hypnosis with the care and attention that must be taken to ensure personal safety.
