Identity Theft Protection Is Available for Individuals
By Bill Southgate
Identity theft is a serious problem in the United States, and businesses and individuals lose millions of dollars every year. The people who are attacked by identity thieves lose more than money. The loss of their reputations and credit ratings are probably much more serious for individuals than the money. Most financial institutions offer identity theft protection to their customers. The identity theft protection offers refunds when their accounts lose money to identity thieves, but the identity theft protection does not keep them from the hassles caused by these crimes. The money is usually replaced quite quickly after these are stolen by identity thieves. These people then have to spend time getting their affairs back in order.
Identity theft protection does not save the reputation of those affected by these crimes. Those affected will have adverse actions on their accounts that they will have to clear. Once they realize that someone has stolen their identity, people have to cancel most of their accounts. Then they have to apply for new accounts and set up other accounts. Some of these transactions will be affected by the information on their credit report.
Identity Theft Protection Is the Responsibility of Individuals
Individuals will have to work with the credit reporting agencies to make sure that the information on their credit reports is revised to show that some transactions are the result of identity theft. The businesses offer identity theft protection and refunds for money that is taken. Individuals must take certain steps toward identity theft protection on their own. Most important, people should protect their social security number. They should never give out this number unless it is vital to an official transaction. Then they should only provide this number to an official in private.
People should work toward identity theft protection by avoiding the scams that these thieves use to get important information. People should never give out their social security number or bank account numbers to anyone that they do not know. They should never give out their passwords to anyone. People should keep this important information out of the garbage. These thieves go through trash to find out personal information. People should protect their computers from hackers who have the skills to get information from private computers. People should check their accounts carefully for strange transactions. These might be a clue that someone has stolen the identity of a person holding that account.
