Jewelry Exchange Trades Less Cash For Jewels
By Charles Wilkinson

What may have begun as an idea to allow people to trade their jewelry items they longer wanted for different types has grown to include custom pieces available through a jewelry exchange on a corporate level. Many businesses tout the idea of visiting their showroom, choosing gemstones they like, choosing setting they want and watching as craftsmen set the stones and walking out with the jewelry they will cherish.

The majority of businesses advertising themselves as a jewelry exchange do not actually allow you to exchange your jewelry for other pieces, rather they buy diamonds and other stones individually, and then allow their customers to select the stones of choice. Customers can bring in their own settings in most places and have the rock they choose placed into it, creating a new piece of jewelry.

These jewelry exchange businesses will also supply a certificate of authenticity for the stone you have purchased along with an appraisal often described as being considerably lower than the stone's actual value. The idea is for people to be able to buy more stone than they would normally be able to afford, giving them a finer piece of jewelry for their money.

Some Jewelry Businesses Allow Trade-Ins

There are still some jewelry exchange businesses that will allow a person to bring in their ring or other piece of jewelry, and exchange the existing stone for a different one perhaps larger or with a different cut and may even offer a trade for the old stone. This can be beneficial for someone who truly likes the setting in which the stone is placed but wished to have a larger, better-looking stone in the piece.

Buying diamonds in bulk has enabled many places to get a better deal, and with the technology to duplicate diamond cuts they can advertise matching diamonds for ear rings or other pieces of jewelry that encompass two or more stones. By visiting a jewelry exchange most can get a better deal over the retail price of a fine jewelry store. Although some traditional stores will claim a jewelry exchange trades quality for quantity, the fact remains that many of the pieces available at a jewelry exchange are top quality items, sold at a reduced retail price and money is made on the quantity of sales.

Being able to take your setting into a jewelry exchange and have a new stone placed while you wait is also a major selling point for many as they hesitate to wait several days for their new piece of jewelry.
