Jewelry Making Is An Art In Itself
By Charles Wilkinson

Like any hand-crafted item, the art of jewelry making takes a special talent. The person has to be able to design a piece so that the stone and metal will go together and not look totally out of place. Begin able to fit a straight piece of metal or a curved one with a specialty shaped stone has to begin with the ability to visualize the finished product before the metal is formed and the stone is cut.

Obviously, most designers work from their own drawings as they work out the finer details of the piece of jewelry they are designing but when they finish they make jewelry making seem easier than it really is. Visualizing the size of the stone and exactly how it is going to fit into the setting and how the setting has to be designed to give the best fit for the stone all has to come together in the end product to work properly.

Being involved in jewelry making often involves having the eye for fashion and working with someone experienced with jewelry making before attempting to make any of your own pieces. Of course, there are some who simply gather the needed materials, design a piece in their mind and are able to put it together like a professional with no thought of putting it on paper first.

Jewelry Making Involves Working With Many Materials

When a person begins jewelry making they have to know they are going to be working with an array of materials. Precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum and gemstones such as diamonds, rubies and sapphires will be the medium in which they work. Knowing that a mistake in the process can be costly, they will usually exercise great care in their art of jewelry making.

Once they gain experience, it is usually accompanied by a reputation that will draw customers to their jewelry making business and, if they are talented enough to adapt to the times, can make a good living at jewelry making. Many times a person will work as a jewelry designer for a company making fashion jewelry and then move up to working for a jewelry company designing fine jewelry as their talent grows.

Many times, once they have mastered the art they will strike out on their own in demand for their designs and the quality of their work.
