Desert Landscaping for Your Backyard
By Jim Carpenter

If you are trying to figure out how to landscape your yard, but you live in a dry climate, a much better option for you would be to use desert landscaping ideas instead of trying to always be caught up with the watering and maintenance.

You might be wondering what desert landscaping is. It is basically landscaping for a place that is much drier than you'd think it would be, and allowing this to work in your favor. Desert landscaping includes making your yard look put together, just like regular landscaping, but in a way that doesn't require a lot of hard work in a climate that doesn't receive much rainfall.

Not only will your yard look different from that of your friends and neighbors, you can save money on water costs and expensive plants and flowers.

Cacti and Other Such Plants

There are several things that are included when you are talking about desert landscaping. First of all, you might find that you are using lots of plants that don't take a lot of water, like cactus. You can use these in just the same way that you'd use greener plants but you don't' have to worry about them needing lots of the water and requiring a lot of work because they simply do not. You can also use other plants that don't need to be watered so often or that thrive in a drier climate.

Rocks and Sands

Another way to incorporate desert landscaping is to use lots of different rocks and sands. You can make sand dunes and rocky paths in places that you would normally try to grow grass. Most of the time, with desert landscaping there isn't much grass because grass is hard to grow if you can't get it started or if you don't have enough water to really get it going. Therefore, it is always helpful to use rocks and sand in desert landscaping.

Another thing that you can do in desert landscaping is to make sure that you are able to see all the different parts of your yard and making them mesh well together. This is one of the most important aspects of desert landscaping because the desert all flows together. Therefore, if you are deciding to go with desert landscaping you can really make these ideas flow together to give a pulled together look to your whole yard.
