A Beautiful Landscaping Design Can be Found in an Herb Garden
By Jim Carpenter

The art of landscaping design is something that homeowners sometimes hire others to accomplish for them. However, the more interesting challenge is for the homeowner to come up with his or her own landscaping design ideas, and a great place to start is with an herb garden.

Landscaping Design and the Ideal Yard Look

The goal of most homeowners is, through landscaping design, to create a peaceful yard as a retreat during the spring and summer months. While some may elect to randomly place flowers and plants all over their yard, a more practical approach is to create a designated area that has a special attraction. Thus, herb gardens are a wonderful way to incorporate practicality, beauty, and aesthetic peace into the landscaping design of any yard.

Herb gardens are renowned for their healing properties, depending on what the homeowner chooses to plant in them. For example, for those who have a stressful lifestyle, it is a good idea to plant peppermint or lavender in an herb garden, to be picked later and used as air freshener or, in the case of peppermint, a soothing tea. These are not only hardy plants, but they also have lovely purple flowers that are prevalent throughout the summer months.

When it comes to landscaping design, there are many different options on how to create an ideal herb garden. Herb gardens can be big or small, and are most often circular, square, or oval in shape. Some who are especially creative might want to try to design an herb garden in a unique shape, such as a diamond or a hexagon.

As for the placing of an herb garden within a yard, it is important to place the herb garden in a place that receives partial shade. Thus, it is a common sight to see herb gardens towards the back of a yard rather than in the middle.

If one does choose to incorporate an herb garden into their landscaping design, it is important to do research on the best herbs to place together in the garden, as some may try to overtake each other and become hybrids. Also, try to keep a central theme for the herb garden such as exclusively for medicinal purposes or for cooking purposes. Indeed, with the proper planning, one can create a beautiful herb garden for that is sure to become the centerpiece of any yard.
