Choosing The Right Landscaping Plants Can Make Or Break A Project
By Jim Carpenter
For a landscaping project to look good it is essential for the landscaper to choose the landscaping plants carefully. Each type of plant has its own characteristics that can effect how it looks, grows and interacts in a landscape design. Additionally, some plants are harder to care for than others. If the landscaper does not choose his landscaping plants carefully then he could end up with a landscape design that requires a lot of maintenance and that does not look as good as it could.
There are an array of landscaping plants from which to choose. The key to choosing the right ones is to understand the criteria and characteristics that make an ideal landscape. With a goal of a simple and easy to care for landscape, the landscaper wants to make sure he chooses plants that have characteristics to meet those needs.
Spatial Needs
It is a very good idea to choose landscaping plants that compliment the size of the area to be landscaped. If a landscaper chooses plants that are too big, then they will spend plenty of time pruning and cutting back to keep the plants within the landscaping borders. If a landscaper chooses plants that are too small, the whole look and concept of the landscape design will not come out too good and they will have to use a larger number of plants to fill the area. The whole idea is to find landscaping plants that fit the area so maintenance is kept to a minimum.
Plant Needs
A common issue is that plants in a landscaping design do not have the same needs. Some plants need sun, while others need shade or some need lots of water, while others prefer a dry soil. It is essential that a landscaper uses plants that have the same needs, so that they can thrive and be easily maintained. It is possible to use plants with different needs in the same landscape design if the area has distinct sections, like both shaded and open areas. Also, some plants need more space to grow then others. This is an important factor to consider because these plants need far more room to grow than varieties that do not spread.
When a landscaper focuses on choosing landscaping plants it will help the finished product to look put together, neat and be easy to care for. Each variety of plant is different. They grow different, require different things and will add something different to a landscape design. If a landscaper does not keep these things in mind he could end up with a landscape project that requires a large amount of maintenance to keep it looking beautiful.
