Using Stones In Your Landscaping
By Jim Carpenter

Proper landscaping should make use of all the beauties of nature. Many people think of landscaping as only involving greenery and possibly even water, but do not consider stones as a landscaping element. However, rocks and stones are an important part of many cultures' traditions when it comes to design and environment, and you should consider them, too. They have many uses, and you will be surprised at the difference they can make in the appearance of your yard however you decide to use them.

Landscaping With Stones Of All Sizes

You may want to use very small landscaping stones to fill flowerbeds and other enclosed areas. Use them in places where you would normally use plain old dirt to add that “something extra” to your design. Imagine a bed filled with beautiful white rocks, with yellow rose bushes growing up from among them. This is just one of many ideas. You can definitely come up with your own ideas, based on what you would like to see in your own yard. Don't worry about the flowers or bushes; as long as you have dirt below the landscaping stones and roots long enough to reach into the dirt, your stones will not harm your plants' growth.

Landscaping with large stones has a lot of great potential for design ideas as well. You can use stones as large as you want. You may find basketball-sized stones to line around a flower garden or other part of your yard. You may find large flat stones to create an elegant walkway to your porch, instead of just regular cement sidewalks. Even large stones up to boulder-sized can be placed in your yard to create a unique look that no one else can duplicate.

Where To Find Landscaping Stones

Many nurseries and home improvement stores offer stones that have been selected as perfect for landscaping. But one of the advantages of rocks is that they're everywhere, so they're not expensive. If you want to go for a more natural look with your landscaping stones, feel free to use stones that you find anywhere. There are probably rocks of some sort in your yard right now that could be used for landscaping. All you need to do is find them and arrange them how you want them.

When you add stones to your landscaping plans, it's easy to see how a whole new world or possibilities will open up to you. Have fun coming up with new and original uses for them. Happy landscaping!
