Asian-Themed Landscaping With Ornamental Trees
By Jim Carpenter

Landscaping with beautiful trees can add the perfect touch to your yard. This article takes a look at one of the more popular types of trees used in landscaping: the Japanese maple. When looking at Asian or Japanese-style gardens, you can almost guarantee that you'll see these graceful trees used for landscaping.

31 Flavors?

If you're planning to do some landscaping and need trees for your own Asian-inspired garden, visit the website buymaples.com for a look at what's available. Although they don't quite have as many “flavors” as a Baskin-Robbins store, there were 23 species listed at last count. The featured trees were quite impressive, especially the BloodGood, Higasayama, and Waterfall trees listed.

The BloodGood is a red variety of maple that grows up to18 feet tall with dark red leaves that change to a bright red in the fall according to the description. The leaves have the distinctive shape that people know and love.

The Higasayama is an unusual variety with variegated leaves, and adding some of these trees to your landscaping would add a unique touch to your garden. The leaves on this specimen are green in the middle, with white markings, and are pink right at the outside edges. It grows to a maximum height of 20 feet and is quite charming.

The Waterfall is another lovely maple with green leaves that turn a bright yellow in the fall. With a cascade of thin, delicate leaves, it truly looks like a waterfall. This maple grows to a maximum height of around ten feet tall and is a standout specimen by itself.

Trees In A Dish

Japanese maples are also popular not just as ornamental trees for landscaping purposes, but as trees used in the ancient art of bonsai. The literal translation of the word is “tray plant”, and it was invented by the Chinese over 2,000 years ago. Japan absorbed a lot of art and culture from China over the years, usually taking and refining the best of it, including bonsai.

The oldest and most beautiful bonsai specimens can be worth tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars. There have been specimens that have even sold for seven figures! If you love Japanese maples but don't have room to landscape outdoors, some species are suitable for use in bonsai, so you can still enjoy these lovely ornamental trees without a sizable backyard.
