Landscaping Waterfalls Adds To Central Focus
By Jim Carpenter
Very few items can make your yard stand out above the rest as a landscaping waterfalls and depending on your design and extravagance it can add a great deal of focus to any landscape design. It can also function as a source of water for irrigation for other plants or as a home to outdoor aquatic life.
If you have enough space and room in your budget you may want to consider a water wheel type of landscaping waterfalls in which a wheel turns as the water cascades down it and into a small pond. These are similar to the water wheels that were used in grist mills. This can create a great focal point of your landscaped yard.
If your pond is surrounded by flower beds, water from the landscaping waterfalls can also be used as irrigation, as needed, for the flowers and can be diverted away from the waterfalls to travel to a raised portion of the beds and dispersed into the rest of the area. The water wheel can also be designed to work as a pump to draw water from your pond.
What you make the landscaping waterfalls from is your choice and the number of available materials is also diverse. Typically, medium size flat stones or bricks are used to create the falling water effect and some type of plastic sheeting is used to guide the water into a reservoir once it has made the journey down the falls.
Moving Water Stays Cleaner
Practically all homeowners who incorporate water within their landscaping agree that still waters not only run deep, but they also tend to be dirtier and the use of fountains or landscaping waterfalls helps keep the water moving as well as cleaner. There is less build up of floating debris and very little foam, allowing you to keep the water clear without the use of chemicals. This can be important if you plan to provide a home for fish or aquatic plants.
Another advantage of using landscaping waterfalls is in keeping other natural debris from covering the surface of your pond. Leaves and grass clippings often accumulate on the surface of ponds and eventually sink to the bottom. Over time, this can diminish the depth of the water in the pond. By using landscaping waterfalls, the water's constant motion will help keep this debris near the edges of the pond from which it can be easily removed.
