Secrets to Following a Good Low Carb Diet

There are many fad diets on the market today, and some have actually seen many positive results – at least in the short term. However, many of these trends in diet programs die out almost as quickly as they start because they are too extreme for most people to follow for long, or the results are short-lived. This can be true of some of the low carb diets that many are following today. Does that mean that there are no good low carb diets to choose from? Absolutely not! The key to a good low carb diet is to find a program that does not swing too far to the extreme, and has plenty of menu choices to keep the program interesting.
Watch your Fats
Since it is nearly impossible to follow a low fat diet at the same time that you are cutting carbohydrates from your menu, the key to a good low carb diet is to watch the types of fats that you are consuming. By sticking with polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, you can contribute to healthy eating as well as weight loss.
Eliminating too many carbs from your diet is also not a great idea over the long term. It may help you to lose a number of pounds at the beginning of the program, but you are giving up fiber and nutrients that are difficult to make up in other foods. A good low carb diet will actually include some good carbohydrates like the ones that are found in whole grain breads and pastas. Most people who end up sticking with a low carb diet of one sort or another will generally include some carbohydrates at a certain point in the process.
Eat your Greens
Fruits and vegetables also need to be a part of a good low carb diet. If you feel unsure about adding certain types of this category to your program, you can stick with green vegetables and avoid fruits like bananas and pineapple that are higher on the glycemic index. Fruits and vegetables provide many essential nutrients in a healthy diet, and can also provide plenty of variation to an otherwise bland program. The other advantage to fruits in particular is that they provide a mouthful of sweetness that is much more satisfying to a dieter than a cookie or candy bar. So take it from your mom and eat your fruits and veggies!
Get your Exercise
A good low carb diet, as with any type of weight loss program, will be much more effective if it is combined with a regular exercise regimen. Not only will a daily workout help you drop the extra pounds, but you will enjoy an increase in mood, energy and mental abilities. With all of the great things that exercise offers, why wouldn't you want to get walking? Weight loss is a long and difficult process for most. With a good low carb diet and a regular exercise routine, you can see success in achieving your weight loss goals.
