Following an Atkins Low Carb Diet Plan
By M. A. Fulmar
Most would agree that the Atkins low carb diet plan is one of the harshest ones out there; that's not to say that it doesn't work, for more people, Atkins diets work exceptionally well. But are they easy to follow? That, on the other hand, is not so clear. Different people have different levels of success when it comes to following an Atkins low carb diet plan and getting results.
Why the Variability?
Different people have different dependencies on carbohydrates just like different people have varying degrees of addiction to caffeine. Following an Atkins low carb diet plan puts one's habits when it comes to carbohydrates to the test. Some people claim that they can not go even one meal without carbs.
While the body does run primarily on carbohydrates, there are many other ways of fueling one's body; the idea behind the Atkins low carb diet plan is to get your body to access your stored body fat instead of using immediately available, recently eaten carbohydrates and any stored glucose that your body stored for quick use. Losing weight on this kind of a diet is the result of burning stored body fat for energy instead of burning all those starchy carbohydrates you used to eat.
Some people find the first week of a low carb diet plan such as Atkins extremely difficult. This is not surprising because people's food habits are very deeply ingrained into their lifestyle, much more so than drinking alcohol or other occasional things. Food is consumed every day, many times a day, so food habits are hard to break. However, despite this initial difficulty in following an Atkins low carb diet plan, a lot of people find subsequent weeks to be extremely easy.
Some dieters claim that it's really easy to stay away from carbs once you notice how quickly the weight comes off simply by not eating carbs. While there's an upper limit to this simple, psychological, reasoning behind staying away from carbs, it's a big motivational factor when it comes to successfully following a low carb diet.
If you're someone who's highly dependent on carbohydrates, you might try switching your favorite carbs for whole grain versions of the same thing. Making simple changes like this will help make the transition into a full-out low carb or even no carb diet much easier. The glycemic index of foods is what contributes to the emotional effect of carbs and the sugar high feeling that it gives many people. Whole grain versions have a much smaller effect, but they give those who need it their carb fix for the day.
