Still an Effective way to Lose Weight: the High Carb, Low Fat Diet
By M. A. Fulmar
Many doctors and nutritionists are still recommending a high carb low fat diet as the most effective means of losing weight. The food pyramid that we have all used as a guideline for healthy eating supports the high carb, low fat diet as well. Healthy carbs like whole grain breads and pastas should make up a large portion of our diet, according to the food pyramid.
On the other hand, fats like those found in oils and sugars should be limited as much as possible. While there has been evidence in recent years that a low carb diet can be an effective method for weight loss, the high carb, low fat diet can also help an individual lose weight if the diet is combined with a regular exercise program.
Why Cut the Fat?
Fats are far from the healthiest category of food that you can choose. Foods that are high in fat can raise cholesterol and contribute to heart disease. Fatty foods are often high in sugar and low in nutrients. Some foods that are high in fat are referred to as empty calories for just that reason. It is clear that cutting back on the fat in your diet can lead to better eating habits and a healthier lifestyle.
But that is not the entire story when it comes to weight loss. In addition to reducing your fat intake, you must also cut back on calories if you are serious about dropping the pounds. Even too many calories from healthy foods will contribute to weight gain. The best way to lose weight, besides sticking to a high carb, low fat diet is to burn more calories than you consume. That means you must combine a healthy diet plan with a regular exercise program for maximum weight loss benefits.
High Carb, Low Fat Diets Do Not Contribute to Weight Gain
Some people who are trying to lose weight are concerned that consuming more carbohydrates will actually put on the pounds rather than take them off. The truth, according to many doctors, is that eating too much of any type of food will make you gain weight. The key in eating carbohydrates is to select complex carbohydrates that are high in fiber and low in sugar. These include starches such as potatoes, pasta and beans, in addition to whole grain bread products.
Not only are these items high in nutrients, they will also make you feel full so that you do not have to consume as much. If you combine these high carb items into a low fat diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, you will be well on your way to healthier eating. Combine this high carb, low fat diet with a regular workout routine, and you will feel good as well as look good when the pounds begin to drop.
