There are many reasons why a computer user may wish to upgrade their monitor. One reason may simply be the decision of the individual to modernize their equipment. Another reason may be the computer user wishing to free up more space at their workstation and replace the larger CRT monitor with a sleeker computer monitor. Or perhaps, the traditional style of monitor has simply refused to power on.

There are many newer computer monitors that are available on the market today. One of those types of monitors is the LCD computer monitor. The acronym of LCD stands for liquid crystal display. Before purchasing an LCD computer monitor it is important to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of LCD computer monitors.

Advantages

One of the primary advantages of LCD computer monitors is the appearance of the unit. These monitors are sleek in design and are equipped with a flat panel screen. In addition, because of the LCD technology, the screen's depth can be measured in a few inches or less and the greatest depth is the base which holds the display. These dimensions are part of the advantages of utilizing a LCD computer monitor because less space at the computer workstation is required.

Another advantage is that less energy is required to operate LCD computer monitors. In addition to conserving energy, there is less heat emitted from the monitor.

When it comes to performance, LCD computer monitors excel. This is because the LCD technology utilizes digital signals. This type of signal utilization is different from the CRT monitor which uses analog reception. The differentiation in performance is realized through the clarity of the image viewed on the monitor which allows for higher definition of the image.

Disadvantages

There are a few disadvantages associated with the purchase of LCD computer monitors. First of all LCD computer monitors are more expensive that a typical CRT computer monitor.

Secondly, LCD technology is more fragile. This is due to the fact that the screen can be likened to a mirror. Therefore, the possibility of cracking the panel display is more of reality if an object strikes the screen.

One other disadvantage to using a typical LCD computer monitor is if the computer user is an avid computer game player. This disadvantage can be seen when playing computer games that have quick movements as part of the program. Most LCD computer monitors cannot capture the rapid movements and the resulting images may appear blurred during that rapid action.
