2007 Mothers Day Marks 99 Years of Honor
By Wendy Simons

Although the 2007 Mother's Day marks the 93rd year of it being a national holiday, the first Mother's Day was marked in Grafton, West Virginia in 1908. It was in May, 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson made the declaration of Mother's Day to honor all moms, living and dead.

One of the country's first peace activists, Julia Ward Howe wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation in 1870, suggesting that June 2 be set aside as a day to honor all mothers. Julia Howe became more famous for a song she penned, Battle Hymn of the Republic. She spearheaded a celebration termed Mother's Day of Peace in Boston on the second Sunday in June for a number of years. It is now celebrated the second Sunday in May, which in 2007 Mother's Day will be on the 13th.

In 2007 Mother's Day will be celebrated in a number of countries, many with more importance placed on spoiling moms with leisure time and gifts, but in some countries, it is more of a personal celebration than a commercialized one. Many countries, in the beginning, used the day to show reverence to their mothers and in Britain, people were to travel back to their mother church on the day, bringing the family together at least once each year.

Commerce Has Taken Over Celebration

The 2007 Mother's Day is expected to repeat previous years in being the day that ties up phone lines all over the country. Although, with so many cell phones in use, land lines may not be as busy as in the past, but it will still be the one day of the year when the most calls are being made.

The sale of flowers and cards will also mark 2007 Mother's Day holiday, as more cards are given on Mother's Day than any other holiday. Flower sales will also go through the roof as husbands not only honor their mothers, but their wives as well, as being the mother of their children.

Restaurants also see a surge in business and the 2007 Mother's Day is not expected to be any different. While dad and the children may make mom breakfast in bed on Mother's Day, there are not many who want to tackle cooking a full meal when it is easier, and usually better, to take mom and grandma out to a fine restaurant on that day.
