Since the first national observance of Mother's Day in 1914, children all over the nation celebrated their mother's love and influence on the second Sunday of every May. An important day, set apart from all other days, to recognize moms everywhere for all the love, hard work, dedication, sacrifice and family support that is given to the family through-out the year.

A Day to Honor All Mothers

Historically, it was in 1908 that Anna Jarvis held a church service to honor her deceased mother, an informal Mother's Day; the first of it's kind. This could, in fact, be considered the first unique Mother's Day gift, as a day of recognition for moms everywhere was the fulfillment of her deceased mother's dream. At an early age, Jarvis had overheard her mother express the hope that someday a special day would be set aside to recognize and commemorate all mothers. Her mother had observed the fact there were many calendar days to honor men but none to honor women and the many things that they accomplish. Two years following her mother's passing, Jarvis began a campaign to have a national day set aside to recognize all mothers. She and her friends began a letter writing campaign and in 1914 Congress dedicated the second Sunday of May as a national day of recognition for mothers everywhere, Mother's Day. Since that day, the search for the unique Mother's Day gift has taken an important place in every child's heart. The definition and decision as to exactly what makes the perfect and unique Mother's Day gift for mom is generally defined by the age of the child, what is considered perfect at age 5 will not be appropriate to a 25 year old.

An Expression of a Child's Love

Just ask any mother that has worn a multi-colored macaroni necklace to a formal Mother's Day Brunch or left behind her expensive diamond earrings to wear the cheaply manufactured jewelry purchased by her child at a school fundraiser. The love that is found in the tiny hands of a child when extending something special they have made or bought cannot be replaced or purchased, it is priceless. In fact, it is the recognition, value and effort of the young children to create such treasures that is truly the gift. When a mother's young child delivers a scribbled coloring book page as a gift, it is worth more to her than any Picasso.

An Adult Child's Expression of Thanks

As adult's, many order a special bouquet of their mother's favorite flowers or purchase her favorite chocolates as a unique Mother's Day gift to show their love. Creativity in unique Mothers Day gift giving could result in the commission of an art piece, writing of a song or poem that reflects personal family moments, renting a large billboard or newspaper advertising space, complete with a picture of their mom and words of love. Unique mothers day gifts are as unique as the mother's who receive them and with a little planning, you too can surprise your mom this mother's day.
