Do You Know When is Mothers Day and How It Started?

Not many people know or realize when is Mother's Day coming until someone tells them. Actually this day is something we should never forget besides other important days such as mom's and dad's birthday. It is a day where every child expresses how much he or she loves their mother, and how much they appreciate their mother's hard work all this while in bringing them up. It should not be a question in your mind of when is Mother's Day; instead it should be remembered at all times. If we were to look at why this day was very important when it was first announced as a public event, we can see that the reason was the ignorance of many people in not recognizing their mother's toil. And this ignorance had raised importance in certain groups of people, which announced the celebration of such an event.

History behind the Day

The earliest celebrations were reported to be during the Greek empire, where they had spring celebrations in the honor of Rea, or the mother of the Gods. Several thousand years later, in the 17th century, this occasion was celebrated commercially in England as “Mothering Sunday”. It was basically celebrated to honor the mothers of England. Sons who work very far from homes would be allowed and encouraged to go back home to celebrate this day with their mothers. Eventually this event became something so common, that whenever you ask someone when is Mother's Day they could tell almost instantly.

In United States, mothers' day was first celebrated in the late 19th and early 20th century. In 1907 Ana Jarvis from Philadelphia began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. She persuaded her mother's church in West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. Eventually she publicly requested everyone to celebrate and establish a national level mothers' day. And to this, in 1914, the president made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day on the 2nd Sunday of May. So if you were asked “when is Mother's Day?” you should be able to answer by now.

This day was observed as national mothers' day in many other countries worldwide, and in fact they have commercialized the whole occasion so that everyone knows it by heart. If one were to ask you when is Mother's Day, you should be able to answer immediately. If you fail to, there are always online calendars to remind you; for it is simply not a day to be forgotten.
