Pros and Cons of the Wii Nintendo System

If you're like the hundreds of people who pre-ordered Nintendo's Wii game console months before the official launch, then you're probably the first few gamers to discover the pros and cons of the Nintendo Wii systems. Although it has been almost two years since the first rumors about the launch of Nintendo's new game console, the Wii has only be in the market for a couple of months.

At first glance, the Nintendo Wii system looks like it was pulled out from the Apple hardware line because of its aesthetic appeal and pure white cover with gray shades. Measuring only six inches wide, about two inches tall and 8.5 inches long, the Wii system can be positioned vertically or horizontally.

The highlights of the Wii Nintendo system include wireless internet connection, innovative motion-sensing remote controls, wireless controllers and a handful of useful features and services.

Weighing the Pros and Cons

If you're after for a jaw-dropping graphics quality, the Wii will disappoint you. Since the Nintendo Wii system uses an ATI as graphics-processing unit, you can expect a significant improvement from the previous Nintendo GameCube console with better animations and richer colors. However, compared to PS3 and Xbox360, the Wii can only support resolutions below 480i and 480p.

One of the most debated issues involving the Wii Nintendo system is the unavailability of DVD playback. Since it uses only a 5.25-inch optical drive, the new Nintendo console cannot play high definition formats, such as Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

DVD playback is available for Japan versions, while information of an updated DVD-capable Wii version for all other countries has not been released. The benefit from this lack of feature is that you can expect the Wii to be twice as affordable as both the Xbox 360 and PS3.

For people fond of customization, you can appreciate the “Mii” feature that allows users to create their own avatars and change hairstyles, body shapes, facial expressions and other physical appearances for the Nintendo Wii systems.

One of the best features of the Wii revolve around the simple-designed remote or “wii-motes” that offers users a more flexible and comfortable gaming experience. It serves as a pointing device, rumble device, speaker and other functions. You can also add a Wii nunchuck that allows you to play off-hand by simply using two buttons.

The online functions available for the Nintendo Wii systems allow you to use your gaming console as a personal computer. It gives you access to daily news, weather reports and forecasts, online game downloads, redeem Wii points, purchase new and retro games, buy mp3s online and acquire new software for your system.

Simply put, the Wii Nintendo system may not be as graphically impressive as the PS3 or Xbox 360. However, it offers both hardcore gamers and beginners with a handful of features, a state-of-the-art game controller and user-friendly interface at an affordable price.
