Sport Nutrition: Burn More, Eat More
By M. A. Fulmar
Even if you aren't a professional sports player, some aspects of sports nutrition still apply to you. This is because under normal circumstances there should be some regular activity that you are involved in. Jogging, running, golf, walking, working and swimming can in a way be classified as a mild sport.
If you do expend your energy in any of these ways, your food and nutrition requirements are different from those leading sedentary lives. Sport nutrition can be demanding, but at the end of the day, it fits your lifestyle of being active and healthy.
Sport nutrition generally demands more of the ‘keeping up' nutrition than the ‘growing up' nutrition. ‘Keeping up' nutrition is different in the sense that you are eating to support your lifestyle and survival. ‘Growing up' nutrition is mainly focused on teenagers, children, and those who are in need of nutrients to support their ever-growing body. The former is more related to adults whose growth rate is constant, while the latter doesn't.
When it comes to sports, even though the growth rate is constant, there is still much need of nutritious food. And the special food groups that fall under sport nutrition are needed to support the extra activities these people are involved in. This is simply because the metabolism rate of these people is higher, results in faster burning of food, and requires more calories in general.
Food High in Calories
It is true that foods high in calories are very dangerous to health. But when it comes to sport nutrition, the main source of food would be high in calories. As we know, the metabolism rate for those who are active in sports is high, and this can only be supported by foods high in calories. The more calories; the more of energy supply there would be. And higher energy supply is definitely needed to cater towards the demanding nature of the activities that these people are involved in.
But high calories do not necessarily mean high fat calories. If you were to buy packaged foods from the supermarket, you can look through the nutrition label on the side of the box. Calories come from both the fat and carbohydrates. It is the second type which is more important when it comes to sport nutrition, simply because fat is not good for health. This is an important thing to consider when shopping, because in some people, no matter how many sports they are involved in, they still pile on pounds because of unhealthy food choices.
