Online Charity Auction: How To Shop For A Good Cause
By Martin Johnson

Many online shoppers are familiar with online auctions such as EBay or Yahoo online auction. The madness of placing bids and checking hour after hour to see if you have won increases the adrenaline and adds a bit of spice to the sometimes mundane task of shopping. If the materialism of the online shopping world has numbed you, you may be interested in online charity auctions. Online charity auctions work very similarly to other online auction sites; however, with online charity auctions, some or all of the proceeds from the sale go to charity. Read below for more information on online charity auctions, including how you can shop and what causes are supported.

How You Can Shop

Within most online charity auction sites there are two different ways to shop: by auction item or by the cause that is supported. One example of a charity auction site is Charity Folks, which secures items mainly by donations from celebrities. While many of the categories such as art, books, clothing and accessories are the same ones seen on other online auction sites like EBay, Charity Folks has an entirely different array of items to sell. One such category is Power Lunches. Here, purchasers can bid on time, specifically on lunch, with Hollywood stars such as Tyson Bedford and Liv Tyler. In addition, there is a Hollywood Section in which bidders can bid on experiences, memorabilia, set visits, swag, walk-ons, and movie premiers.

In addition to shopping by auction item, bidders are also able to search by their favorite charities. In other words, if TeachersCount is the charity you wish to benefit from your purchases, you can click on that charity and see the items that are available that may be sold with proceeds going to that charity. EBay and Yahoo Auctions have general areas available to items that are sold for charity.

What Causes Are Supported?

The specific causes that benefit from the online charity auctions will vary depending on the auction you are participating in. Charity Folks has a long list of recipients, such as the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Love Heals, and VHI Save the Music. Other auction sites such as CMarket offer items for specific organizations such as National Eating Disorder and The Home for Little Wanderers. On CMarket, each organization has essentially their own online charity auction that buyers can browse through, creating yet a different level of shopping for buyers.
