Online auctions are popular these days, so much so that Weird Al Yankovic has even created a parody in which he sings “I bought on EBay” to the tune of NSync's “I Want It That Way.” For some, online auctions may just be another place to do some of their yearly Christmas shopping. But for collectors, these online auctions open up a world filled with collecting possibilities otherwise unknown to them.

So is true for the numismatists, otherwise known as coin collectors. Online coin auctions offer these souls in need of a new piece of shiny metal the chance to purchase and sell their favorite possessions. While there may be more than three, it seems that the top three sites for online coin auctions are EBay, Yahoo Auctions and Teletrade. Read below for more on the online coin auctions offered by each of these sites.

EBay Online Coin Auctions

One of the main categories on the EBay auction sites is the coin and paper money category. Within, it is subdivided into nine subcategories including U.S., Ancient, World and Bullion. Those subcategories are then divided even further. Ancient coins, for example, is broken down into Greek, Islamic, Byzantine and more as the items on the auction continue to change.

Yahoo Online Coin Auctions

The Yahoo categories differ from EBay in that the categories include coins, bullion, medals and tokens, paper money, scripophily, stamps, and supplies. The coins category is broken into United States, World, and Ancient, each of which is broken down further into specific denominations.

Teletrade Online Coin Auctions

Teletrade differs from Yahoo and EBay dramatically in the way the website is designed and the auctions take place. Instead of a one item auction, which is essentially how EBay and Yahoo online auctions operate, Teletrade online coin auctions are held on specific dates and have lots available for purchase. Browsing and searching catalogues can be done to search for specific coins, most of which are divided by denomination.

Bidding can be done over the Teletrade site as with the other two online auctions, or bids can be called in by phone. Finally, Teletrade accepts generally the same payment options as the other online coin auctions, including PayPal.

What to Choose?
The online coin auction you choose for your collecting purposes is going to choose on how you like to shop online and which one is more user-friendly to you. You may find that each site has strengths and weaknesses, so the best way to determine the site for you is to explore all three.
