Organic Food Is For The Birds
By Rose Hannigan

As we approach the concept of healthier eating habits for ourselves, it is also important to recognize the need to provide healthy food options for the other living things in our world. Wild and domestic birds should always be fed organic bird food.

Pesticides Are Not A Bird's Best Friend

There is a growing concern that the increased use of pesticides in our yards and on agricultural farms is causing the number of wild birds to decline. It is estimated that millions of birds that are exposed to the pesticides each year are dying off in records numbers because of this exposure. The US Migratory Bird Council suggests that the numbers could be as high at 672 million birds exposed and roughly 10% of those birds are killed by the exposure. Changing the conventional food production practices of our nation to the healthier organic practices would insure that the wild and domestic birds would consume organic bird food and greatly reduce their exposure to the toxic chemicals. This simple practice would decrease the number of wild birds that are dying each year and would help to stimulate our natural resources. Currently, the conventional methods of food production are causing great disruption in our environment, animal and plant life and concerns for the dietary reactions in our own bodies.

Pesticides Climb The Food Chain

Pesticide pollution is driven by air, by rainfall and by the general consumption of the wild animals of the food chain, working the pesticides up each level. As the animals ingest the toxic chemicals, their levels increase and each in turn does further damage as the level of the food chain rises. The same is true with birds. Their need for organic bird food is extremely important due to their size and their increased metabolism. If something isn't done to increase the number of organic agricultural farms, our animal and bird wildlife will continue to suffer and decline.

Household Birds Need Organic Bird Food, Too

The toxins that are found in conventional bird foods also affect pet birds. Parrots are known to be extremely sensitive to environmental toxins. Their immune systems are extremely fragile and respond quickly to the toxins in conventionally produce bird food. Organic bird food is a much safer choice for domesticated birds as it is free of the chemicals and pesticides found in conventional bird food products and thereby extends the life of your pet.

However, the need for organic bird feed goes much further than the small birds in our homes. It is imperative that the daily dietary needs of the wild birds are dealt with. If our country and others continue to use the conventional methods of farming and food handing, these practices will destroy the natural resources, plant and animal life around us.
