Pain Relief - The Holy Grail For Many Who Suffer

Pain often dictates what I can and can not do. It drives me mad to the very edges of insanity then, as it subsides, sends me floating into oblivion. This is as poetic as I am ever going to get on a subject that has destroyed my quality of life. I hate pain with my very essence, with every fibre of my being and I pity anybody who suffers from chronic pain or even persistent mild pain.

Pain relief or, at the least, decent pain management is the holy grail of many who suffer from one of the great many ailments that lead to severe pain.

Understanding Pain Relief

To understand pain relief you obviously need to understand pain. My introductory paragraphs attempt to shed some light, on the subject, for those who do not suffer. There are various types of pain and the differences determine which method of pain relief is a most suitable course of action.

Acute Pain

Acute pain is that which occurs from trauma and is likely to subside following suitable treatment of the causing factors. Pain relief, from acute pain, often takes the form of pain relief medication such as painkillers. Acute pain can be intense to such a degree that a person can lose consciousness.

Chronic Pain

In contrast to acute pain, chronic pain can be far more difficult to treat. This is due to the causes of chronic pain which are often difficult to diagnose and therefore finding suitable treatment is also difficult. Making the task of identifying the route cause of pain is the fact that pain can often be "referred" (a simple explanation of such is that pain that should occur in one place is transferred to another). It is also common for chronic pain to be suffered for a sustained period of time.

As I explained earlier I suffer from chronic pain and have done so for a great many years. Sadly it has become progressively worse over those years, during which I have tried various methods of pain relief with limited success. Most effectual in my pain relief regime has been the use of pain killing drugs. However I was able to visit a pain clinic a number of years ago where it was explained to me that my use of the drugs had been incorrect.

The problem for me is that I suffer a number of different types of pain, back pain, muscle pain, arthritis pain and symptoms similar to fibromyalgia as I suffer from M.E. I have to admit that I only developed the chronic back pain in the last few years but this is, by far, the most distressing of all and the pain I would most like to gain relief from. At the pain clinic a number of doctors assessed my medical problems, the level of pain I suffer and the pain management regime I had been following.

After only a few visits to the clinic my drugs were changed and the new drugs and their correct usage was explained to me. So far I had been waiting until I could no longer bear the pain before I took the pain relief drugs and I would then need to take a relatively high dosage. This inevitably lead to pain relief but also produced a drug induced high which wasn't as pleasant as it sounds! This was wrong and I was surprised to learn that the best way to gain relief from pain is to take the painkillers before the pain starts - this may seem strange to many but because chronic pain is often continual you actually know that you are going to be suffering soon (if you aren't already).

By following this method of pain management I was able to gain increased periods of pain relief. I still get pains in my knees, back, legs and muscles but it is not to the intensely high levels as previously. I even manage to get small periods of time in which I almost have no pain at all. Unfortunately these are far too few and far between and only really last up to 30 minutes but they are very much appreciated by me and my family (for reasons obvious to those who know and understand the problems associated with sustained chronic pain).

The articles below are aimed at helping those who suffer from all types of pain to gain relief from it. I hope that you find them useful and informative. However I am sure that you realize that it is best policy to seek professional medical advice if you suffer any serious pain. If you have done so and still do not get pain relief you should return to your doctor immediately and keep pushing for referral to another consultant until such time as you are able to get adequate pain management.

I really do wish you the very best luck in your struggle.
