Perfume and Cologne: They Are Not Synonymous Fragrances
By Mary Henderson
When you are shopping around for the right scent for a man, or for a woman, keep in mind that you may want to note the differences between perfume and cologne. It is not just in the outer appearance of the bottle, or the box it comes in. Perfume and cologne are different in the ingredients that are used. Here is some background on perfume and cologne, and why they are made of different fragrances for men, and women. Perfume, which is what women's fragrance is generally called, was invented to create a pleasant and sweet smell to men. It is made up of a volatile liquid derived from flowers or fruits, or sometimes it is made synthetically in the laboratory. Perfume is usually quite strong, and only a small dab is needed to emit a pleasant scent. Depending upon the brand and the strength of the fragrance, some women's perfumes can last up to two days after application, even with shower and daily activity. Most French perfumes were created like this, using three “notes” in the fragrance. Each note was a different scent that would come about in the beginning of the day, lunchtime, and at the end of the day.
Men's Fragrance
In keeping up with the tradition of exuding masculinity and strength, men's cologne is typically made up of less sweet smells and derives from ingredients such as Fougere, Spicy and Woody diluted oils and alcohol. Cologne is not meant to last longer than a day, so daily application is needed in order to keep the scent going. But it is important to remember that when apply cologne, use only a moderate amount, as too much cologne can turn a nice scent into an overwhelming, nauseating experience.
Most perfume and cologne can be purchased at any retail store you frequent. Depending upon how much you are willing to pay for your perfume and cologne, the more expensive the label, the stronger the fragrance. If you are just wanting to smell nice and aren't' worried about wearing a popular, trendy fragrance, then you can find a discounted perfume usually at any drug store or retail shop. But, the cheaper the fragrance, the more you will have to apply to get the desired effect. Cheaper perfume will also fade faster then the expensive brand. When it comes to purchasing perfume and cologne, the choice is up to you to decide how much you want to spend, and if the scent will not be too overpowering.
