Find The Right Pet Grooming Scissors
By Emily Sanchez
If you're looking to make the step from just using a brush to groom your pets and trying to give your pet a neatened haircut, or even if you're looking to trim out nasty snarls from long fur now and then, a good pair of pet grooming scissors will be a big help to you. If you're not sure what to buy, though, then purchasing a pair of grooming scissors for your pet may seem like a confusing task. But with a few tips, you'll be buying a great pair of pet grooming scissors and taking care of them for a long time to come.
Picking A Pair
What's the best pair of pet grooming scissors to find? If you're not sure or if you're looking for just a simple pair of scissors for simple tasks, the first place to look is your local pet store. Most stores carry a selection of pet grooming supplies and you'll at least learn what sorts of scissors you're looking for. If you're looking for something a little more professional or plan to do a lot of grooming, then you may want to look online or see if there's a store in your area that specifically sells pet grooming supplies.
The biggest factor, though, is comfort; if a pair of pet grooming scissors isn't comfortable, don't use them! That discomfort could be the difference between a good and bad cut, or even between a safe cut and accidentally nicking a pet.
Scissor Care 101
Once you own a pair of scissors you like and work well, you will want to take care of them so they last a long time, of course, and this goes double if you bought an expensive pair of pet grooming scissors. Remember that a pair of pet grooming scissors is in fact a simple machine, and like all machines, they need regular care. A drop or two of oil on the blades every so often will keep the scissors working smoothly and in humid climates, will keep away rust, which can ruin your blades. Smooth running blades also mean less chance of accidents while grooming.
Of course, cutting with a dull blade can be unsafe as well, so you want to do everything you can to prevent damage to them. In between uses, keep your blades in some sort of sheath to prevent accidental opening and damage while they're being stored. It's also safer than reaching into your drawer and accidentally cutting yourself on the scissors! No matter how well you treat your blades, however, they will eventually grow dull. To keep them sharp, visit a professional knife sharpener, or if you insist on doing it yourself, make sure to use a sharpening stone on the blades. With just a little care, you'll have a great pair of pet grooming scissors that will last you for a long time!
