Pet Grooming Tips for the Inexperienced Groomer
By Emily Sanchez
You have a cat or dog that you would like to groom yourself at home, but you're not too sure of how to go about doing that. Luckily, if you are an inexperienced groomer, there are some helpful pet grooming tips.
Pet Grooming Tip #1: Make Sure You Have the Right Supplies
The first important pet grooming tip that you are going to need to follow is making sure that you have the right supplies to groom your cat or dog with. These supplies should include a pair of grooming scissors, nail clippers, shampoo, a hair dryer, a comb, and a brush.
Pet Grooming Tip #2: Choose the Right Brush
There are many different kinds of grooming brushes that your can choose from, and it all has to do with the coat of your pet. For example, if you have a pet with a fluffy coat, it is important to get a paddle brush to keep that fluffiness. If you have a pet with a finer coat, get a brush that is for more sensitive use.
Pet Grooming Tip #3: Choose the Right Shampoo
Grooming your pet is not just as simple as putting any shampoo on your pet. Animals are sensitive to human shampoo, so you must always select pet shampoo from your local pet supply store. Be sure to select the pet shampoo that is applicable to the kind of skin that your pet has. For example, if your pet has dry skin, get a pet shampoo that has natural, hydrating ingredients in it.
Pet Grooming Tip #4: Choose a Grooming Area that You Don't Mind Getting Messy
Grooming a pet means that you will not only get yourself wet and soapy, but you will also get the areas around you wet and soapy. This being said, be sure that the area you select to groom your pet in is an area that can easily be cleaned. The best place is the bathroom.
Now, if you have a large dog that won't fit in the bathtub, the best thing to do is take it out in the backyard and groom it there. However, this should only be done during warm weather for the sake of the dog's health. In colder weather, consider getting the dog professionally groomed.
Pet Grooming Tip #5: Have Patience
Pet grooming, no matter what kind of pet you have, can be stressful, especially if the animal is a cat that doesn't like being bathed. However, you are sure to get used to pet grooming with the right tools, as well as lots of patience.
