Fine Art Photography Paints with Cameras, Light and Film
By Andrew Kelly
Many people think of fine art as painting with oils on canvas by famous artists who hang their work in spectacular museums. Fine art photography is great photography that produces wonderful images like those in paintings. Fine art usually moves the emotions of people, and just as Picasso entranced his fans, Ansel Adams and Eugene Smith have mesmerized people with the images they captured with a camera on film. The great artists using oils on canvas have many counterparts who are photographers like Adams and Smith. Fine art photography captures subjects similar to those found in the great paintings of artists like Picasso and Monet.
Fine art photography includes many different subjects. Fashion photographers like Richard Avedon have produced fine art photography with images of fashion designs from the greats like Balenciaga and Chanel. His fine art photography has images of gorgeous models like Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell. The fine art photography from fashion is a cut above the rest of the photographs of people. There are great portrait photographers whose work could also be classified as fine art photography. Although there are millions of portraits in photographs, some of these have special qualities produced by great photographers.
Fine Art Photography Includes Images of Nature and Social Issues
Some of the images included in fine art photography are images taken from nature. These images include photos of lions taken in Kenya and polar bears photographed in the frozen tundra. This fine art photography includes images of rattlesnakes in the Sonoran desert and flamingoes in the wild. These great photographers create art with an orchid that might be very ordinary taken by another less talented photographer. The images of landscapes that might not exist in the future help to preserve these places as people realize the dangers that threaten them.
Fine art photography has changed the world. There are images from great photographers that have affected people who have later become involved because of injustice or abuse. Brave photographers have shown the horrors of war and ruthless tyrants that have moved others to work for peace and prosperity for all. Their images are provocative and emotional because of their skill with their tools and their passion for life. The images from great photographers take their place in important museums because these images are more than simple pictures. The photographers that produce fine art are masters like their counterparts using other materials.
