Photography is an Art Form
By Andrew Kelly
Photography is the art of capturing an image onto permanent medium. We are able to do this by capturing the light onto a light sensitive material such as a light sensitive sensor or film.
For most of us these days the art of taking a decent photograph is lost amid the constant snapshot attitude of the camera equipped mobile cellular phone. This has been fueled by the Internet and sites like Bebo on which we can add our photos with comments. These sites are popular with younger people and, I must admit, there is great enjoyment to be had by looking at some of the hilarious pictures that appear there. My kids both have their camera phones but they also have a "proper" digital camera each. This allows them to develop their skills as photographers.
Digital Photography
Digital photography has brought photography to the masses more than film photography could ever achieve. Photography has never been cheaper and more accessible than it is now and it is all down to the magic of the pixel.
Digital cameras range from those cheap and nasty vga sensors found in some lesser quality phones and in spy devices right up to the semi-pro and professional cameras made by the likes of Nikon and Canon. High quality cameras are now available for less than $100 and the price of high quality SLR cameras continues to fall while the functionality and speeds increase.
The uses of digital cameras are immense, they are as equally at home in boudoir photography as they are in landscape or fine art photography. As the price of memory cards falls their usability stretches still further. In the case of wedding photography the cheap memory card and the forever decreasing time between shots allows the photographer to take hundreds more photographs without fear of increased cost. Prior to the digital camera the photographer would need to change his film after only a small number of snaps and the film was use once only. Now he can take hundreds of photos before he needs to change his card and the card can be used many times.
Photography Accessories
A wise wedding photographer will invest in a portable hard drive. These devices have small screens to view images but, more importantly, they often have slots for virtually every memory card available. The photographer can download the photos from the card onto the hard drive and then reuse the card. This means he can take as many photos as he wants and at an event such as a wedding this can be extremely important as some things can not afford to be missed.
Other essential accessories for the modern photography enthusiast are spare batteries. Film cameras were mainly manual but all digital cameras rely upon the battery without which you simply can't take photos. Nearly all cameras have rechargeable batteries so, if you own a car, consider the purchase of a charger for the car or a power transformer so that you can plug in the charger that comes with your camera.
When I bought my first digital camera memory cards were very expensive, so expensive that rather than buy loads of the damn things I bought a laptop with just a 40gig hard drive for far less than the cards would have cost. Today they are cheap and certainly far easier to use than a laptop ;-)
I hope that you consider taking your interest in photography much further. It is such an enjoyable hobby but each photograph is a record of a moment in time and as such is priceless. Photographs taken now will prove to be far more valuable in the years to come and will be greatly appreciated by a large number of people besides yourself.
I hope that you find the articles below useful and informative. I will continue to add to this archive as I am addicted to photography ;-)
